That's the way baseball go. And I think we made the right decision by keeping our window open as long as we did. Now, real question is, how many of those guys we traded turned out to be real difference makers at the MLB level? As we have seen with Profar, not all prospects turn out to be Harpers or Trouts

Agreed. JD would've been *****ed out for not going for it at the time. We had a good run, time to recharge.

Yeah. I have zero with the trades they made to go for it. Or paying a rebuilding price for it now. My main issue and concern with the org right now is how they've screwed around in the draft. They've got to get more from it.

It's easy to say that now

Judge taken to hospital for MRI on wrist. May be a blessing in disguise for us if it's serious. I know a DH/ RF on the trade block....

I have zero problems trading Kela. He's been nothing but drama and pretty mediocre with the exception of this year

Absolutely agree. Unless there were plans to move him into the rotation (which there is/was none) than you MUST move a bullpen arm to get prospects/lotto tickets, especially when this team won't/can't compete for the division until 2020 at the earliest. Bullpen arms are fickle, cash in when ya can.

Yeah, I don't question trading any BP arm if competing for a title is not in your plans for the next 2 years. Cash out.

Seriously? When you have a shot you have to go for it. We did, had a nice playoff run with a couple Workd Series appearances. Just didn't get it done. Easy to arm chair quarterback later and say we should've tanked a year earlier.

Actually it's hard to say that now. It's hard to say you took your medicine going for it. But knowlegable baseball fans know thats where we are.

Technically Adv A.

Much of the Hamels deal came down to money next year as well. Texas wasn't going to keep Hamels at $20m for 1 year, so even with the money being sent to CHC part of this trade involves not having to pay a $6m buyout next year.

So as much as I'd like to get three or four solid prospects for Cole Hamels, I'll go on the record as saying I'm good with this trade. This is the second potential starting pitcher we've gotten back in a week and there's probably more to it (considering the money we're sending). Gotta stock the system.

Best part of trades like this is watching Twitter idiots rant ("Daniels outta be fired for not getting more" - "Nolan Ryan wouldn't be in this situation" - etc.)
mhayden

Yeah, after seeing what the trade market was last year it's foolish to think we were going to get any kind of mega-return. Get him off the books and get some lottery tickets.

This doesn't sound consistent:
Quote:

Earlier today, Sherman reported that the Cubs were willing to take on about $4MM of the roughly $14MM still owed to Hamels ($7.98MM of his $22.5MM salary plus at least a $6MM buyout on next season's $20MM club option).

If the Cubs only take on $4M, they won't take on the remainder of the 2018 salary, let alone 2019 buyout.

Let's see how this winds up... but if the Rangers are getting only $4M in relief... that isn't a whole lot...
DannyDuberstein

Right, that's how I took the article (Rangers still on the hook for $10 of the $14 combined 2018 salary and 2019 buyout). However, speaking as a finance/accounting person, journalists are notorious for not being accurate when it comes to reporting about $$$, so there's a decent chance the article is wrong. It's at least possible that they decided to split the remaining 2018 salary down the middle and the Cubs are on the hook for all of 2019.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah I may be wrong on that - I just can't see Texas essentially paying the rest of his 2018 salary + buyout next year to get a low level guy or two.
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yeah, I know his value isn't what it was, but it's even lower than I thought if they still have to pay that much of the remaining deal to get this prospect. That's where I'm hoping the journalist made some assumptions about the buyout that are not correct.

I could see Diekman and Kela being next to go. Think of those two you'd get the better return for Kela. Possible Leclerc could go as well.

And while that would for sure get us more prospects... man that would just KILL the bullpen. It doesn't matter at this point in the year but yeah.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
LSB saying three pitchers -- two prospects and a AAAA type guy.
Joe Cole
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AAAA types are Ranger starting rotation material

Yeah... You still gotta field a team though. So one more AAAA lottery ticket guy that maybe pans out.

Us kicking money in for Hamels signifies we're fine with paying to re-stock -- so good that ownership isn't being tight in that regard.
Joe Cole
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, I think their main focus is just trying to come up with some kind of rotation from now until the end of 2019

The Austin Jackson trade was very encouraging to know they were willing to essentially buy a prospect. I hope they can find a partner for Choo, even though it seems remote.

I don't know the exact breakdown of Boston's 40man situation, but Beltre seems like a perfect fit for them to come in and mentor Devers for 2 months

I can't see them finding much joy in the experience, but they may not have much of a choice.

Yeah, I guess the alternative is keep him and roll the dice you can flip him in the off-season or at the deadline for more, but the no-trade-clause means that could potentially blow up in your face as well.

Just read that the Mets have signed Austin Jackson, so that will save the Rangers a little money.

Not only that, looking through the Cubs top 30 prospects this morning and we got a guy nowhere near the top 30. (Their highest rated top 100 guy is #97) I understand he has been in the system only 13 months and is in high A ball and can develop but I don't think we go much for him. Maybe should have asked for some sunflower seeds and a bucket of BP balls in return.

We got 3 lottery tickets for a guy with a 4.72 ERA (11.12 ERA in July).

Sounds about right.
