So the Houston Astros are in Dallas, 20 minutes away from Rangers Ballpark, where they were offered to play 3 "home" games.

They instead opted to force their players to get on a plane and fly 1100 miles away to Tampa.

Yikes... Seems as though that organization values 3 games of a homefield advantage over their players well being.

Its a 2.5 hour flight
Not a huge deal

So if it's not a big deal then what is all the crying about?

Astros didn't want to sacrifice home-field advantage.

Rangers didn't want to piss off 60,000+ fans that had already bought tickets.

So they're playing in Tampa.
How many of the 60K (which is a dubious number but lets not go there) would really be "pissed off?" The weather is nice right now in Arlington (a rarity for this time of year) so perhaps it would work better for them...who knows.

It also gives the Rangers an earlier homestand to make up ground on the wild card and play road games in late September when the Astros might be resting many of their starters.

The Rangers averaged 22,000 in a scorching hot mid-week series vs the Seattle Mariners. Averaging over 20,000 a game vs Houston isn't a "dubious" estimate at all.

And it's not just about how many are pissed off. It's about how many would even find out in time -- you realize that you're wanting on a Monday night to notify people that the tickets they have for a game in a month is now tomorrow or the next day?

So, yes, you are screwing over a lot of fans. But if it was just to get the games played, OK... But it's not just to get the games played... It's to make sure Houston keeps homefield advantage for 3 games.

Sorry, Houston keeping homefield advantage for 3 games isn't worth Texas screwing over it's own fans. Texas offered it's field and it's money, Houston wanted more.

So what it really came down to is Houston wanted home-field advantage in 3 games and felt Texas should screw their fans over to do so.

Texas said they'll happily donate to the cause, but they aren't screwing their fans over.

This is the meat and potatoes of it, and every baseball front office would have chosen to do the same, were they in the Rangers' shoes

And ultimately that would be the end of it. But the Houston front office publicly trying to frame it like Texas is somehow uncaring to the City of Houston's plight is downright shameful.

"Keep homefield advantage"...you make it sound like the Astros are greedy for wanting to keep their NORMAL allotted amount of home games. This is where COMPASSION for a fellow Texas city hurting comes in but whatever.

This story doesn't get anywhere near the amount of attention it has if Reid Ryan doesn't spout off to the media. Any other organization in baseball (Houston included) would've done the exact same thing.

Heaven forbid the texas fans are inconvenienced so two teams can keep the same number of home games

I mean Houston fans lost homes, property, and the city is in shambles but holy crap can you imagine if you had to refund tickets and tell some people that they wont have a baseball game to attend in September? I mean thats the real tragedy

The rangers saw this as an opportunity to help their slim playoff hopes by getting 3 additional home games

Thats the bottom line and that makes them scum

Do you think the GM of a team should voluntarily put his team at a scheduling disadvantage because a catastrophe hits another city and makes another teams venue unplayable?

Other franchises would have been flexible....how in the hell does it screw the Texas fans? They have a month to make arrangements. It's an even swap fair and square. It was a VERY selfish move and totally negates what sports is all about. Dallas folks can spin this all they want but it's trash....the national media will pick this up and agree.

They have a month make arrangements?

They have tickets for games on September 25th, 26th and 27th.

They would be told on Monday night that those tickets are instead good for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

That's less than 24 hours to make arrangements.

Houston needs help, is offered a field to play and proceeds to help victims... and then is upset publicly about what another team offered in "negotiations".

Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Baltimore-Tampa Bay, 2015

Race riots in Baltimore forced the Orioles to move their series with Tampa to the Trop. Despite being before the All Star Break they never rescheduled any other series to get that home series back. A reasonable solution for an organization that doesn't have an inferiority complex.

What makes Jon Daniels not a decent human being because of this? Would flood waters have dissipated, clouds have parted, and a dove flown down from heaven if JD would've agreed to swap series and the Astros had three more home games a month from now?

It was a scumbag move. Plain and simple. With as much uniting & generosity that is being shown in and to Houston, this sticks out.

Ultimately is small potatoes in what's really going on. Enjoy living up to your reputation.

The Texas Rangers offered to give proceeds from a 3 game series in Arlington this week to the hurricane victims.

Instead of taking those proceeds, Houston opted to fly their team 1100 miles to Tampa Bay to not give another team any kind of home field advantage.

Houston front office valued home-field advantage in 3 games of a 162 game MLB season over proceeds that would help hurricane victims.

Bravo Houston front office. You certainly have shown us all what priorities we should have during trying times.
