question,

If all of your friends and family were stuck on a island that just got hit by a cat 4 hurricane and the entire island was out of power with very limited way to contact your loved ones, would you be able to focus on hitting a baseball?

Yes I would,
but that is part of the reason why I was in All Stars growing up

And probably throw a perfect game the way we hit crappy pitchers.

Part of the reason for the Cubs and Braves on that map is at least when I was growing up (80s/90s) you had them on TV almost everyday on WGN and TBS - just a lot more exposure for those two teams.
The Braves also have the added benefit of there being no MLB teams in northern Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, or Virginia. I know the map has teams other the Braves in a few of those states, but they do have a huge following in them as well as "the team of the south"

This feels like the same discussion we had about Correa in April. Hopefully the playoffs match his month of May.

Hinch w/ Palilo today: Link

My notes below, link above if you got 15 minutes:

-Not a big fan of expanded rosters this time of year (could tell he didn't like all the CWS pitching changes)
-Thinks criticism of base-running is fair. "Outs on bases are noteworthy and aggravating." Will talk to players afterward about strategy, particularly depending on what part of MMP the ball was hit to if it was in play. "We don't celebrate the aggressive success as much as we criticize the negative results"
-On Correa struggles since his return: big keys will be strike zone judgment and direction. Trying to direct the ball and get hits can sacrifice power and focus on the strike zone. Giving him the day off tonight to reset his focus. Brought up the situation in Puerto Rico.
-On Carlos Beltran: he will get an opportunity because in the playoffs he will be able to handle the pressure. Not too far removed from some good games. Left handed is way better than right. His presence and leadership mean a lot to this team. Strike zone judgement has been good although it has not produced great results. Still has a few series left to formulate a game plan and see what direction they will go at not only the DH spot but other roster spots as well.
-On Indians and BoSox: Verlander and Keuchel most likely will not pitch in Boston. Those 4 games will be interesting. Chasing the Indians for best record but if things are already sowed up position-wise in that series the games might not be competitive. Some players will have to get reps against Boston regardless. Cannot expect guys to rest too much and then just turn it on all of a sudden in the playoffs.
-Asked who he would vote for 2nd in AL MVP: "Jose Ramirez"

Man, 2 seconds would have made a big difference in the Verlander trade. It apparently was closer to not happening than we thought.

These are from the SI article that was cited in that Yahoo piece

Quote:

Finally, at 9:14, as they sat down at a nearby restaurant, he got a call. It was an executive from the league's office in New York City.

"The deal's been approved," the executive said. "But, Jeff, don't ever put me through that again. We received final verification from Verlander at 11:59 and 58 seconds."

In the morning, Luhnow would speak to his new starter. For now, though, Luhnow ordered a Tito's vodka and soda, with lime. With two ticks of the clock to spare, and despite obstacles both contractual and natural, he had pulled off a trade that might propel his Astros to a long-awaited championship. But he'd also done something else.

Pretty sure I'd need more than one Tito's and soda

Quote:

"The reality is that any economic modeling that includes projections is not going to like a deadline deal, where you're trading what could be an enormous amount of future value for a decent amount of present value," says Luhnow. "The math does not support these types of deals. It's a matter of using your best judgment."

Not surprised but interesting to see they use economic modeling to evaluate baseball trades.

What amazed me most about all those stories from the night of Verlander's trade is how late everyone eats dinner.

Verlander said they called him with the idea of it as he was leaving dinner at like 11:30. I remember a quote from Altuve or Correa about how he said he found out the discussions were heating up while he was at dinner at like 1030 central.

WHO EATS THAT LATE

Most of those guys probably go eat after their games and most don't wake up before 10 am

That was the ugliest AB for Altuve that I can ever remember seeing. The end of his seasons have not been kind to him.

You must've missed the last week.

In all seriousness though he looks lost up there. Letting hittable pitches go and swinging at trash

Pitchers seem to figure out Altuve pretty well by the last couple months of the season.

Feed him breaking balls and offspeed on the outer half and he'll cast his hand at almost anything. Especially with 2 strikes.
