At the game and there aren't very many woobirds (I hate them too). They must just be close to a mic and Root won't tune them out.

Remember that phantom foul tip the other day? Apparently a similar call almost cost the Nationals a win just now. Atlanta was down 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded. Batter struck out swinging to end the game, but it was called a foul tip.

How the **** is this not reviewable? Going to have to revisit that in the off-season. Umps are getting worse and worse.

Seriously, why does Jose stand so far away from the plate?

He has to reach for everything outside and they'll never throw him anything to hit on the inner half.

I understand and I don't question his ability to hit, just confused because last season he seemed to crowd the plate more and get meatier pitches on the inner half. I think that's part of the reason he hasn't had the chances to drive the ball and hit for power this year.

This year he is reaching a lot but has done a decent job of hitting it where it's pitched and shooting it the other way (see his % of hits to right field this season).

Still though, his back foot slides out at least once every AB this season because he's having to extend so much to cover the outside corner, something that could be avoided by crowding the plate another 4-6 inches. Just my opinion...

I think he stands far off the plate because he knows he has the bat control to reach out and poke an outside pitch to RF while at the same time be able to barrel up an inside pitch and not get jammed. I hardly ever see him get jammed.

Not a lot of hitters have the bat control and hand/eye coordination to reach out like Altuve. He can hit pretty much any pitch.

Good point. Those guys that crowd the plate usually hit tons of pulled foul balls too. It seems like if you pitch Jose inside he can usually keep it fair.

Don't forget about last week when altuve doubled on his bloop shot down the right field line on a 2 strike pitch on the outside corner. After the game, the pitcher (can't recall who it was) said that was the exact pitch he wanted to throw and that altuve was the only man in baseball who could hit that

I've always recalled seeing Jose stand way off the plate. That's the approach he has taken for the last several years. I even remember asking the same question you did, only he rakes so it's pointless to question a 5'6" guy who hit .330 with 25+ homeruns. Obviously he is doing something right.

I can't remember the last time I've seen altuve look as uncomfortable at the plate as he did last night. His last two ABs looked like he had never seen a slider in his life. Sliders inside coming from a RHP locked him up completely.

All valid points, just making an observation. I've played baseball my whole life and watched Altuve for years and I personally think he'd hit at an even higher clip if he crowded the plate a bit more, which is a scary thought for the rest of the league!

It used to drive me insane how far Carlos Lee stood from the plate and got burned on pitches on the outer black, but he doesn't have half the hand-eye coordination of Jose haha
