I just heard on the radio that 4 years ago the Rangers turned down a trade for Stanton. Package? Matt Harrison, Martin Perez, Mike Olt, and Jurickson Profar.

Four years ago Profar was a top flight prospect, Perez hadn't had TJ, Olt was at least well thought of and I don't think Harrison was a stone man yet. Sucks to look back at but it is what it is.

Yeah, sucks to look back at, but this is a classic case of hindsight being 20/20. 4 years ago, that was a ton to give up. I think Olt was a top 5 prospect in the Rangers system. Profar was the top prospect in the game. Perez was young, talented and went 10-6 w/ a 3.62 ERA in his age-22 season. Harrison was coming off a 2011 season where he went 14-9 w/ a 3.39 ERA and a 2012 season where he went 18-11 w/ a 3.29 ERA.

So basically, they were asking for 2 of our top prospects, including the #1 prospect in the game, plus two pieces from the rotation who were young and looked very promising. Unfortunately, injuries derailed Harrison and Profar. Perez has not been the same since TJ. And Olt hasn't sniffed the big leagues since 2015.

And you weren't trading for Stanton right now -- you were trading for 2-3 years of cheap Stanton and then a mega-contract.

I'd like to see Gallo at 1st. Platoon Choo and DD. Bring up Calhoun to DH.
Gallo has RF written all over him. He has a strong arm and Springer-type athletic ability. Gomez in CF, and you can hide DD's arm in LF. He throws as well as Rickey Henderson.

For next year, Mazara needs to learn 1B. He is a terrible OF with no up-side. Even when he gets a jump, he still can't track anything down. He runs like a slow version of Napoli, but he is tall, LH, and has a good arm.

It's okay for now but playing Gallo at 1B is wasting his arm.

Mazara needs to learn 1B, but Guzman also plays there and I'm fairly certain he's gonna be up here all year in 2018

We're going to have a logjam as long as Choo is here. That will especially be the case if Guzman and Calhoun are up w/ the big club. No matter the configuration, the OF will be pretty weak defensively. Some will shake out post-2018 if Beltre retires, but the way he's hitting, I don't think that's a guarantee at this point. Do the Rangers re-sign him after 2018 if he wants to continue playing?

If Beltre wan'ts to keep playing, you need to keep him around. At least as long as he is still a serviceable player and can play the field. Obviously we have a logjam at DH, so hard to stash him there on a full time basis.

Speaking of which, not sure how many years we have left on the Choo contract, but I think we need to eat some of it and try to move him to somebody needing a DH (maybe Ichiro will retire after the season and Tampa will take him). Choo is still serviceable as a hitter, but it's hard to have him, Mazara, and possibly Calhoun on the same team all being LH hitters and limited in the field.

Agree on Beltre, and I think Choo is here till 2020.

Found this article on BR.

So... 4 years ago would be trade deadline 2013? He was scheduled to be a FA in 2017 (after season?).

In November 2014, Stanton signed a mega deal with Miami for 13yrs/$325M. His contract is HUGE. Carries him until 2018, with a floor pay of $25M per. 3 of those are $32M per.

Looking back, it supports what mhayden has said and that is prospects are just prospects. In 2012, Harrison (age 26) went 32 GS, 3.29 ERA for the Rangers.

For the 2013 season, Perez went 20 GS, 3.62 ERA.

Both young Lefties with promising futures.

Where as Stanton:
2013 (23): .249 BA, .365 OBP, 116G, 24 HR, 140 SO
2014 (24): .288 BA, .395 OBP, 145G, 37 HR, 170 SO
2015 (25): .265 BA, .346 OBP, 74G, 27 HR, 95 SO

Just for comparison... Gallo:
2017 (23): .211 BA, .327 OBP, 109G, 35 HR, 146 SO

Probably too much to ask, but a sweep would be nice before this long road trip.

That would be nice, but need at least 3 out of 4. Winning just two ends up being a waste of four games on the schedule that we need to keep moving up. Obviously all four is the most optimal, but hard to do even against the White Sox.

Shhh,... there are Astro fans monitoring this thread. They might get wind of this and find a way to get their GM to pull the trigger on a meaningful trade

White Sox have the worst record in the MLB, yes?

We SHOULD at a minimum win the series. But with the way this season has gone, I'm kind of expecting us to struggle for whatever reason.

Well, at the end of the day we are still rolling Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, Martin Perez and AJ Griffin out there.

Even sweeping a historically bad team like the 2011, 2012 or 2013 Houston Astros would be tough with those 4 arms.

Yep. If not careful, Houston will find a way to switch AA affiliates and take all of the prospects.

Is there a reason MLB hasn't moved to the NFL/NBA method of "pay as they play" ? Seems like a money-grab.

Sent. And thanks!

Sadly, time and distance preclude my attendance at the game.

Looking back at Gallo highlights on YouTube and in retrospect it's actually pretty funny that his first career hit was a single, considering what we know of him now.

MLB and the NHL do it as a way to draw in STH and keep them.

When I was a Dallas Stars STH, they required you to purchase 2 series of playoffs at a time.

Then, when you ask for your money back, it was often after the next STH down payment was required, which meant you had to leave the money with them as your down payment.

It was one of the things I never liked about being a STH. That is... how they managed the playoffs. In hockey, you have a realistic chance of making the playoffs until the very end, in most years. So, you had to buy playoff tickets.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's originally why every team did it -- but the NFL and NBA (and not sure about NHL?) have since moved to a system where you are paying as the team advances (with a credit card on file) or in some season ticket holders cases, you are charged a few weeks after the season for every game that was played.

Just wondering why MLB hasn't moved to do that. Not specifically Texas, as I don't think any team does it.

Is there a team that gets more production from their back up catchers?
