Some talk on the radio yesterday on the drive home about a possible trade with the Brewers Gallo for Lucroy. Anyone interested in that at this point?
We have one of the smartest front office staff in the country. That deal would go down as the worst in history

That was my thought as well. The guys on the radio were going on and on about how he would add power to the catcher position and be an upgrade defensively. But I don't see it being worth the #1 prospect in the organization for him.

That hat is awful... Like really bad

Last years was awesome. Wish I could have got one

I love those hats (don't remember what last year's looked like though).

I've seen way too many uber prospects ultimately fizzle to definitively say that would be a bad trade, however I think that the upside of Gallo is too great to risk over what Lucroy brings to the table. I know it would be unpopular here, but I'd give up Mazara for him though.

You don't give up Top 10 prospects unless it's for a guy that will put you over the top.

Lucroy only does that if he has a bounceback year.

He's not exactly a consensus top 10 prospect. I think that he is a fine prospect, but his ceiling is nowhere near what Gallo could end up being. More often than not, those guys are Mike Olt or Jusin Smoak, rather than Adrian Gonzalez. Lucroy fills a couple of major needs with his position and right handed bat. Top prospects are the price you have to pay for all-stars in their 20's that have multiple years on their contract.

Don't get me wrong I'm much like you in that I don't value prospects as highly as some.

But look at what we traded for 4.5 years of Cole Hamels and then compare it to 2 years of Lucroy.

And while I think it's a good assumption that last year was an anomaly - he's still a catcher that has played in 650 games behind the plate and put up a .717 OPS last season. It's not a given he's not wearing down.

Gallo has the potential to be the best power hitter in the MLB. Not saying he'll reach that, or maybe even anywhere close, but I think he has just as much raw power as Stanton from the Marlins. If he can refine his plate approach (and that's a huge if, but it seems like he's at least taken a step towards that from what we've seen in spring training), we could have an absolute monster on our hands. Wouldn't give him up for Lucroy. Same with Mazara, Brinson, and Profar. All of those guys could be studs if they develop. I'll bet on those guy's development.

No worries. We had to move away in January so I was hoping I could get it without making the game. When is Aggie Night this year? Maybe I can make the trip back.
A date hasn't been picked yet. Still waiting on the powers that be at A&M
Date finally gets picked and it's a weekend that I'm out of town. FML

I.
Can't.
Wait.

This is the 1st year I've had kids playing baseball, in 4 years. They have really good coaches and I get to be a parent-fan instead of coaching.

After the 1st practice, my youngest son said, "Dad, I wish we could do this every day." I almost cried.

They had been indifferent about baseball for many years. Last year they watched the A&M/TCU series and they got drawn in (finally).

Who do yall think will lock up the 5th rotation spot?

Sounds like Nick Martinez, although I'm not sure locked is the term I'd use.

I think it sounds like AJ Griffin is going to be in that 5th spot.

The candidates as I see them:

The Rangers have a couple days off the first few weeks, so from what I'm expecting, 5-7 GS for the #5 person.

AJ Griffin (pitches tomorrow) - Likely his outing tomorrow will be the determining factor. If he doesn't put it all together, he could be put on the 40 and then designated to minors. He could also be someone that holds the spot until Darvish returns and then put into the minors.
Jeremy Guthrie ($1.75M) - Backup plan. If Griffin is horrible, he is a veteran that can get some innings. But at $1.75M I think his slow (injury) start to Spring Training could have derailed him.

Nick Martinez (on 40) - Seems to be the next logical choice.
Phil Klein (on 40) - I'm not sure hiss status. Maybe long reliever?

Tepesch - Already sent to minor league camp. Although injured in 2015, isn't he the guy whose sinker always sucks in Arizona because of the dry air?
Gonzalez - Already sent to AAA

Rangers have indicated Gonzalez has a higher ceiling than 5th spot. So he is sent to AAA to get the regular work.

Also... when do rosters need to be parsed to 40? My guess is there are generally 4-5 SPs who are exposed at this time. Guys who may have been 5th starters who got bumped by an overachieving minor leaguer... veteran hopefuls who just couldn't put it together during spring training (like Guthrie)... recovering injured guys who may not be completely healed and get cut from their team's 40...

Not sure who that list is, but it wouldn't surprise me that a few teams are sitting with 6 SPs and one becomes available. Either via low-level PTBN type to a guy outright released.

More diatribe...with the following:
Cole Hamels
Martin Perez
Colby Lewis
Derek Holland

I feel pretty good about the rotation. Anything can happen, but that is a pretty good rotation with lots of upside, right out of Spring Training.

I predict we are going to need more than Darvish added before June, and dip into our minors a few times.

Will be an interesting season... Most projections I've seen have us finishing 3rd. We're not especially strong in any department, but likewise not especially weak.

That being said, hard not to like the Astros chances and you gotta think eventually the projections will be right about the Mariners and they'll finally play to their potential.

In current form I think we're a definite wildcard contender. If Yu comes back and pitches at 90% or better, we're a division contender.

Rangers release Guthrie.

I thought they'd wait until after Griffin pitched on Tuesday, but I was unaware that the Rangers would owe Guthrie $100K tomorrow if they didn't release him.

I was hoping chi chi would get the 5th spot. Would not mind seeing Martinez either. Would like to see if his downturn was inning related or if the league adjusted and see if he can make adjustments

Darn. Stubbs runs like a deer. Loved having him available off the bench to pinch run or play CF in the late innings.

Not to be too sacrilegious about the Aggie compared to the horn, but based on what I've seen of both before, I really hoped and expected to see Stubbs on the team before Ruggiano.
