Also noteworthy. The Pirates used the shift on Mazara. Mazara did what all of us espouse. Hit it away from the shift. He did... he got a hit.
Now, he didn't get a homerun and didn't get a double, but he got a hit.
NOW... if you are going to put the shift on, you know he will take a base hit. Teams will stop doing it, or his BA will be 1.000.
Don't shift and while he could hit a HR, you have a better chance of getting him out.
8 of the 21 runs Mazara has scored have been off of his own home run.
10 of his 21 RBIs have come off his home runs.
It is the most home run heavy run production on the roster.
So, while they may be letting him get on base, the shift is an attempt to force the Rangers to get Mazara and those in front of him in the order around the base paths without Mazara hitting a home run.
The lesson for the Rangers they have to manufacture runs better with regards to Mazara's spot in the lineup.
Mazara got hits twice last night, each with just one out and once with a runner on base, and he never scored nor got an RBI. Mission accomplished for the Pirates.
