. If you can ship him at the deadline for some SP... for say Jeff Samardzija who is 29 with 1 more year of Arb... That'd REALLY help. Holland back in July and it would be time to get optimistic.

Because trading prospects for a questionable Cubs starter worked so well the last two seasons...

Career 1.33 WHIP and 4 ERA... I'm not trading any major league ready young players in a lost season for that.

This is a 0.500 team that if a ton of things fall right could sneak into the second wildcard... But they aren't a title contender and no sense in trading away young talent when you're not.

Agree. Keep the powder dry. The lineup needs an influx of youth to replace the roles that Cruz, Beltre, Kinsler, etc have played over the years. Can't keep shipping it off for short term mediocre pitching. If you are going to trade one because you are loaded in the middle IF, do it for youth that fills a need elsewhere.

This year is one where the 3 and 5 year JD plans need some love, not the 1 year plan.

I just can't make up my mind if I think they should trade Rios or not. I agree that this is a .500 team that might sneak in to the wild card, but I can't decide what that really does for me.

I would be very open to trading Rios. You basically have to suck balls not to have the WC somewhere in sight, so I just can't bring myself to use it as a real evaluation of the team. This isn't a fire sale team by any means, but I do think you try to take advantage of Rios' value this year to replenish the lineup for future years.

If you can get good value in return, you'd have to consider it.

They've got a team option on him next year at a decent price ($7MM, I think). Because of that, I'd be inclined to hang onto him, at least unless someone knocked my socks off with an offer. The fact the rest of the bullpen has gone wonky this year has me gunshy about shipping off what's been the only reliable component - especially being a component I can keep through 2015.

Rios at a $14MM team option for next year isn't quite as attractive to keep. Nice average, but a 7 HR 75 RBI pace isn't very enticing. I'd look to trade for a young player and then spend the $14MM on a FA this offseason.

There are 3 options:

Stay the course: I don't like this option, because we have FAs after 2014. I believe as the trade deadline nears... you might as well buy or sell. Otherwise, you don't maximize your position.

Buy: I'm not saying I'm ready to do this with Sardinas... but showcasing Sardinas helps us either way for 2015, where presumably we'll have a solid young expensive SS in Andrus. Solid cheap young 2B in Odor. Two guys I am well pleased.

With Holland and Soto... I think we'll be pretty solid without much depth. It is hard to not keep thinking Gallo.

Needs: At least two SPs and a 1B. Maybe a DH.

Sell: IMO, if we don't see the team emerge... sell.

Alex Rios - team option for 2015 ($13.5M): .322\3HR\12 SB
Joakim Soria - team option for 2015 (1.80\0.64 - 15 Saves)
G Soto - FA after 2014
Cotts - FA after 2014: (3.67\1.41)
Frasor - FA after 2014: (1.54\1.07)
Saunder - FA after 2014: (3.46\1.77)

A 2015 rotation of: Darvish, Holland Tepesch, Martinez isn't hopeful, IMO... HOWEVER, last I checked... there are TONS of quality SPs on the market after 2014, which should help make it reasonable.

If Texas snuck into the playoffs they'd be underdogs in likely every non-Darvish start.

You don't "buy" in seasons like that.

While I agree you either want to be a buyer or a seller, other teams know that and the market will dictate what you do. If we're not doing anything this year we might as well move Rios and Soria, but not for single-A talent that will likely never see the bigs.

It will be interesting to see the # of true buyers this season with seemingly everyone in the AL still "in it".

But to give a good evaluation of where this team really is -- Texas has 2 more wins than the Astros. And an even worse run-differential.

Holland and Soto ain't salvaging this ship.

If Holland pitches well, that gives the Rangers 2 solid pitching options if they happen to make the postseason. Anything can happen. Lots of young guys in this line up and rotation who could improve by season's end. Also, some vets who haven't played particularly well (Andrus, Choo, Lewis) as of late. I'm not ready to give up on the season yet.

Did I read the box score right? Rangers played the Mariners, and Seager didn't hit one out?

King Miles made easy work of Seattle.

8IP \ 92 pitches. 3Hits. 1BB. 5 SO.

Trade him while his value is high.

Wow, just noticed the Mariners have 3 players in the Top 11 in WAR. No other team has more than 2 in the Top 30. If this team sneaks into the playoffs they've got a legit shot with the pitching.

Rangers won... Yippee... we're going to lose the #1 pick.

Carp in the #3 spot. DAMN YOU WASH!

4 hits in 15 games played. Go Carp.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
All I know is... if the Rangers don't get the #1 pick and miss out on getting a guy like Phil Bickford ... it won't be because Washington or Carp didn't do their part to prevent it.
Fenrir

There are so many negatives in that statement I'm not entirely sure what you're saying.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know Fen... reading is hard. I'll use smaller words.

It won't be the fault of Washington or Carp if the Rangers win games. And if they win they could end up higher than last place. If they don't finish last, they won't get the 1st draft pick. If they don't get the 1st draft pick, they get something higher.

Based on comments about Washington and Carp... the general consensus is that they are a losing combination. Any Win is not because of them but in spite of them.
Fenrir

See what happens when you use the English language in an intelligent manner? People can understand you!

Use fewer negatives next time.

Considering Carp's production thus far, saying that most wins are probably in spite of him is probably a fairly accurate statement. He is really bad.

They are playing .300 ball with Carp in the lineup, so I'd say he's doing a fine job of helping secure the #1 overall pick since the competition for that pick is playing .400 ball.

In 15 years on TexAgs... you could very well be the first person to ever tell me I needed to use FEWER negatives.

Well done!
