Ok, if you were in charge of getting rid of all steroid use completely in the MLB, what would you do? What kind of rules and testing would you set up? and what kind of punishment would you give to players that test positive?

There aren't tests for the stuff they're using so it's kind of a losing battle

then by that same rationale, if a player is prescribed Primobolan, they should not be suspended.

i understand one is for pain management and one is for strength building. But Andy Pettitte said he used to recover from an injury. that is the same concept as cortisone. taking a steroid to give you an advantage in recovery.

Doctors prescribe steroids to people all the time, so it is legal then?

I'm ok with a player taking steroids for recovery from an injury if they are out for the entire season that they are planning on using the steroids. You should have to be out of baseball for at least 6 months after your last steroid dose, and you should be tested during that entire time.

if you institute a rule that say "steroids are okay if prescribed by a doctor" everyone one of these players is going to have a prescription in their back pocket in case they get caught.

the league should have a policy against certain performance enhancers, whether prescribed or not.

any "MLB review board" to review the legitimacy of it would be worthless.

the fact is some steroids are okay and some are not in the eyes of fans.

i'm sorry you can't see the reality and consider it "simplistic."

having a rule in place that allows players to use steroids like the one Rodriguez used if prescribed by a doctor is just stupid.

dlance,

you can still get HGH in any form you want, legally. i worked in the alternative medicine industry where just about every steriod was and still is legally prescribed. i've seen it made in labs to suit patients for different needs in different dosage forms

i don't think you understand how easy it would be to generate a legitimate medical concern. that is why it has to be an outright ban.

if anyone understands it's me. i've been around it more than anyone on the board. if it's going to be a banned substance in sports, there cannot be any loopholes to prescribe it

i agree with that. i was talking about dlance. (which seems pretty clear given the substance of my post)

That's why I say I'd be ok with it if the player didn't play for something like 6 months after their last steroid dose. Make sure it's out of their body entirely before allowing them back in the game, and even then these players should be subject to more tests to ensure they aren't continuing the steroid use.
