Rangers A Fit For Andruw Jones?
By Drew Silva [February 4 at 7:36pm CST]
SI.com's Jon Heyman believes the Rangers could become serious suitors for free agent outfielder Andruw Jones.

"If someone wants to resurrect their career, Texas is the perfect place," an American League executive told Heyman, referring to The Ballpark at Arlington's short outfield walls.

The Rangers currently have outfielders Josh Hamilton, Marlon Byrd, Neslon Cruz and David Murphy on their projected big league roster. GM Jon Daniels said last weekend that he wants Hamilton to move from center to right field eventually, which could potentially open a spot for Jones.

Can he even make it around the bases? He's be a decent platoon DH, Cecil Fielder style.

Jones was a good center fielder at one time, but he's been a defensive liability for several years now. He couldn't manage to hit better than the low 200s in a contract year. Stick a fork in him, he's done.

The Rangers are stocked at outfield positions, they need PITCHERS.... How hard is that for the organization to realize?

He was not a defensive liability, he just wasn't as good as he used to be.

The point is, why would you choose to throw money at an outfielder that you don't need, and is coming off a horrible year, instead of giving the money to a pitcher that has shown interest in coming here, and, if healthy, could really help????????

It's spin. Boras needs to create a market for Jones. He loves to use Hicks and the Rangers as the team showing interest in order to create a perceived demand.

How hard is it to realize this is BS from Boras' mouth piece? He does this regularly. Any time Boras needs to create demand for one of his clients, he runs to Heyman.

Jon Heyman....ug, read Newberg's position on this guy...he is bacially on the Boras payroll.

If he came dirt cheap, I would sign him, and flip him for pitching if he produces by June.

Jon Heyman, hehe, now that's funny.

Heyman also said the Braves were interested when they had no interest at all and were open about that.

Maybe Andrew can pitch.

Nah, we should either bring in Bonds or Sosa...

Good lord, no...they have a surplus of bats already and Jones is lazy, slow, and has zero plate discipline.

Pass.

I wouldnt sign either, but if I had to sign one, I'd sign Bonds before I'd sign Jones.

I want no part of any player who has batted .158 as a veteran.

non roster deal. no risk. will cost nothing. if he comes back strong, he's a helluva trade asset at the deadline or makes Marlon expendable.

it's not like we're breaking the bank here.

Low risk, possible high reward, next to no cost, scrap heap guys have worked well for JD over the past few seasons, and he deserves credit for flipping some decent trades. However, at some point, I wonder if you can overdo it...like, messing with the team's chemistry-wise? Bring in Eddie Guardado all day, every day...the guys a worker, a class act, and can still play a little.

Andruw Jones? Not so much...but who knows? I still say this is a 2010 team at the earliest, and Jones probably can't do that much damage during half a season or so.

the dude won ten gold gloves. if he comes back healthy and hungry for a big contract, he could really help this team by his play and/or gaining more prospects.

Yep, that is true...he just isn't a quality individual is all i'm saying. Not necessarily something that you want to have to deal with when you have a young clubhouse. Although, maybe he just needs a change of scenery.

Is Milton Bradley a good guy? Andruw had to be forcibly pulled from the lineup when he was in Atlanta because he hated not playing.
corleoneAg99

Jones also had to be pulled from the lineup last year because after his big contract, he quit on himself and the team.

And Milton was never billed as a bad guy by anyone who looked beyond Sportscenter clips...he's got a horrid temper and is very childish, but not a bad guy.

Jones may not be a bad guy either...who knows. What is clear however is that he's lazy as all get out and had no problem leaving his team in a lurch last season. Maybe Rudy gets him going...?

Looks like Andruw is on board with a minor league deal:

Per Newberg:

quote:
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Rangers will
announce later this week that they have agreed to terms with
outfielder Andruw Jones on a minor league contract that will pay
$500,000 if he makes the big league club. (The major league minimum
is $400,000.) He'll have contract incentives for up to another $1
million that, according to Sherman, would require that he be a full-
time player all year.

I guess I don't mind this deal. League minimum for a guy who won a lot of gold gloves. We are gonna have a crowded outfield this year, assuming he makes the team.

Hope his attitude changes....that dude is 100% Grade A *****.

Was friends with an Atlanta Thrasher player when I lived in Atlanta, use to go to the games and sit in the players section. Jones was always there, he was neighbors with the goalie (can't remember his name off the top of my head). Dude was always an ass....

Which is amusing considering Newberg is basically a mouthpiece for the organization now.

Nothing bad about the Jones signing. Low risk, high reward, and he's not going to be taking playing time from anyone that we're really looking to develop.

Let the ballpark effects take hold (whoops, I mean the magic of Rudy Jaramillo) and see if you can flip him at the deadline.

How embarassed would you be if you were Andruw Jones and are now making close to the league minimum? Looks like the Braves dumped him just in time.

maybe rudy and RYAN get him going...light a fire under his butt and make him realize he could ressurect his career in A-town...would be nice to see Hambone move to RF and produce Gonzo numbers!

Can't get a pitcher for 500K, major league contract.
