New mock trade just dropped. Cam makes slightly more (in NBA terms) than Keldon and his contract expires in 26/27 - when the team option can be exercised with Wemby. I'd lean no because those Knicks picks feel useless right now, but like the concept of trading back to fill in depth at the SF position

I'm not a big Cam Johnson fan, but I modified a trade I saw on Reddit a little bit that an Orlando fan suggested. They hate KCP and he is a bit redundant with Suggs.
- Brooklyn gets: KCP + Spurs 14th pick + future Orlando swap
- Orlando gets: Devin Vassell + Spurs 38th pick
- Spurs get: Cam Johnson + Goga Bitazde + Nets 27th pick
Nets move way up in the draft and now have 8, 14, 19, and 26 and add defense and a leader. KCP has two years left, so has value as a trade chip at the deadline this year and next summer.
Orlando gets a better offensive player that fits better with their team.
Spurs address shooting, forward depth and backup center, plus have that 27th pick to use on an upside guy like Yaxel, Coward, Will Riley, Raynaud, etc.
We also dont have to use the MLE on a backup center and can use it on best available player. Bring in Luke Kennard? Santi Aldama?

On the Ringer podcast about Pop retiring, Raja Bell said he was in Spurs camp and was the last guy cut. He said he really wasn't ready to play for the Spurs at the time. But Pop called Larry Brown at the 76ers and told Larry to sign Raja. Raja said that made his career and he might not have made it in the NBA without Pop.
Raja really didn't hit until after we got Bruce, so not sure we would have kept him that long. He was on that Dallas team that we beat in the WCF with Bruce, then his break out was the following year with Utah. Utah picked him up on a vet min. That was his age 27 year. His first year as a starter was Phoenix in 06 in his age 29 season.Enzo The Baker said:Guitarsoup said:

I believe it was Derrick Dial that we chose to keep. If it was the other way, who knows what would have happened and if we would have even gone after Bruce later.

The length and athleticism really pop on film, but he's a pretty big project. If he's the pick at 14 he's gonna need a year in the G League to let him get as much playing time and development as possible. In a couple years once he's bulked up and hopefully figured out how to be a consistent 3 point shooter, he'd be a phenomenal 3 and D player.

Completely agree. And he shot 29% from three this year. For an 18yo in a pro league, it isn't awful. Luka shot 28% in Liga ACB with Real Madrid and 32% in Euroleague when he won MVP.West Texan said:Guitarsoup said:Vecenie kept saying "I don't want to say Giannis... but he is 18 and he moves like skinny Giannis"West Texan said:Guitarsoup said:

Like I said, the athleticism and length pop. I love the way he dunks everything when he gets to the rim. I'm not gonna touch the Giannis comparison because he's a freak of nature, but I do think his jumper looks much more natural than Giannis. While he's capable of making some really nice passes, I don't think he has the natural play making instincts either.
I saw that when they announced his extension. Was not expected. Keldon and Fox are Klutch, too.Enzo The Baker said:

I think Detroit is more attractive than Atlanta. Ivey only played 30 games before he got hurt. He was putting up 18/4/4 on 46/41 shooting. If they can keep Schroeder coming off the bench and keep Beasley, they can use that MLE on a Tim Hardaway replacement. Exciting young team led by Cade instead of Trae.Earth Rider said:

Pretty good list of the measurables at the combine in this article.
Sorber's height was a bit disappointing for a center. I watched an NBA scout interview earlier on youtube. it was almost 30 minutes if I remember right. Maxime Raynaud is a guy that impressed. Said what they watch the most is the 5 on 5 scrimmages at the combines, which we don't see or really hear about. The other workouts he said they don't really care about like the shuttles, 3 pt shots, etc.. he kind of indicated they were worthless.
according to the scout, the biggest winner in the combine was Tahaad Pettiford out of Auburn. On the 5 on 5, he was dominant. He shot up draft boards to likely first round. I don't want him, he is a PG.

Sorber had better steal and block rates than Malauch. He's also a really good passer and I think that shows. Sorber was at 2.8a/36min and Malauch was at 0.9. I think Malauch will be a good rim protector - I think he will be a healthy Dereck Lively. But I think Sorber is the complete package (other than 3pt shooting, but he's a center.)Earth Rider said:
Personally I like Maluach over Sorber. Was reading that pre-Duke, Maluach tape showed he had more scoring range and versatility. Sorber is quicker and on tape has a more well rounded offensive game. but Sorber shot 16% from 3 and his jump shooting percentages were low.
But Maulach clearly is the best rim protector in this draft. I know I have said it many times, but we were killed on offensive rebounds and letting layups happen. But I think its a mute point as every mock draft I have seen has him in the top 10. And I've probably seen 20 different ones the past few weeks. He may sign somewhere else after 4 years, but he would really help Wemby.
Sorber is anywhere from late lottery to mid-20's in the mocks.
Quote:
Jeremiah Fears has really shot up draft boards. He went from 15 to 25 to top 7 or so consistently in mocks.
Quote:
Noa Essengue is polarizing on draft boards. He is now going as high as 9 in mocks. but I've also seen him go late 20's. Newell is anywhere from 10 to 25 consistently.
12-14 appears to be Rasheer Flemings ceiling, and his floor is 29.
I'm kind of hoping we draft Esengue. Potential is he could be a superstar, and I would only say that about a few players in this draft. But he is a high-energy, hustle, long, strong defender and rebounder. He could really run with Fox and Castle. I would be excited to watch him develop.
How the starting lineups for the conference finalists were built.

Judging from what I have been reading, the combine is good for media hype and fans get all excited but the good scouts already know what players can do. They want to see what they can do against higher level competition. Especially those players that are projects or played against lesser competition.Earth Rider said:

I feel like the Spurs have a good scouting department so I trust them to do their homework.
The 14th pick is interesting because it all depends on where the front office feels there is the best value. If they want help immediately, I feel like Fleming is more ready to step in because of his age. If they want more of a project with upside, then I feel like Essengue might be the pick.
On another note, Mackenzie Mgbako participated in the scrimmages and had a good showing but is still going to play for the Aggies this year.
