I agree, just didn't want to make a thread since I figured I'd be voted down to hell by the Rockets fans.
What did he do in his career to really stand out as a HOFer besides be a huge ambassador for China?

He was never top 5 in any major statistical category and was never top 10 in MVP voting.
Good person and good ambassador for the NBA to China. His career is more of a 'what could have been' story. Also a "Don't rush back from broken feet when you are really tall" story.

Calling him a bust is pretty stinkin harsh IMO. When he was healthy, he was among the elite centers of the game. I'm with Soup on this one: it's sad to think about what Yao could have been if he was able to stay healthy. He was a career 20/10 guy, so it's not like he was one of the worst draft picks in the history of the sport by any means.
But, if he was an original citizen of the US, would he be in the HOF? Absolutely not.

Anthony Bennett, Greg Oden, Andrea Bargnani, Kwame Brown, Kenyon Martin, Michael Olowakandi, and Joe Smith are all bigger bust 1st pick guys. That's 7 of the last 18 drafts.

This is nonsense. His career averages were 19/9/2, 52% from the floor and 83% from the line. That's not a bust. I'm not saying Yao is a hall of famer. But his numbers are just a tad bit off from Patrick Ewing's. He didn't have the longevity of a guy like Ewing or Hakeem or Robinson, but Houston got 7 good years out of him. Not a bust.
It's just the basketball HOF, not NBA, or even American basketball HOF.
There's plenty of refs, women's players, coaches, writers, etc, including Ambassadors.

But Ewing played like 1400 NBA games and led his team to the Finals. Ewing was also a pretty good defensive player, which was overshadowed by him playing at the same time as Hakeem, Robinson, Alonzo and Deke - all all-time great defenders at center. Ewing also had a storied college career.

Yeah, wasn't meaning to do a full Ewing comparison, was really just taking the "Yao wasn't a bust" angle and Ewing was the first center I looked up and found it to be a half decent reference if nothing else.

Yao's play in the NBA and international basketball factored in to him getting in to the HOF. With that said he is an ambassador to China and the main reason China loves basketball today. Obviously he didn't spend enough time in the NBA to be in solely for that reason. Wish he could have stayed healthy and we could have seen where his career ended up.
Obviously obvious that his induction into the HoF is not based solely on his performance on the court. It's myopic to think that it is. Basketball's (and the NBA's) popularity in China is due to Yao. He is a great ambassador for the sport.

If he got in by being an ambassador, they need to put him in that category. Not one of a player.

The Basketball Hall of fame is not the NBA. It's for all levels, there are great HS coaches, hell even Cslvim Murphy is in the Hall. No issues at all with Yao in.

Some may downplay those 3 games as insignificant, but it got the Grizzlies in before the Timberwolves & Pelicans!!!
You gave the world that memorable battle with a rookie Steph Curry, and who can forget you going toe to toe again with Kobe one more time...and there was some other game.
But seeing you announced to the hometown crowd in Memphis was imaginative and unforgettable...except that you had "retired" before actually playing a home game in Beale St Blue so I didn't actually ever see it. Either way, I know it is probably a tough decision on whether to represent the Sixers or the Grizzlies in the HOF, but whatever you do, we will never forget you, Allen Iverson.
