I'm still curious to see what happens with Terry. He says he wants to play two more years somewhere. Shot was broke all last year but he could still be a good locker room guy for the right team.

If Rudy didn't get cancer, we would have made the playoffs that year. But if he stayed as coach, we probably wouldn't have gotten McGrady.

That's and interesting what if? What if Rudy was healthy and coached Yao and Francis longterm?

Look, I'm probably the biggest Stevie Franchise fan in the world...but that dude was not going to get a championship.

Ty Lawson thinks people are overlooking him in FA because of his drinking. Somebody should inform him that people are avoiding him because he was TERRIBLE last year. He needs to STFU.

dude had a PER of 9 something last season; he was miserable.

...and also the drinking. Terrible + persistent DUI issues = no contract. And wasn't part of the reason the Rockets picked him up that he's supposed to be good friends with Durant? So even that reason is gone.

If that dude could average 15/2/11 teams would let him drink on the bench. His skills have declined, a PG who relies on speed is done when his legs give out.

Didn't know he had a drinking issue, but that's a pretty damn valid reason for not giving somebody a multi million dollar contract.

He had like three DWIs in a year

I feel like he had about that many assists last season.

PER is useless

Only if you think the great measures of a player are ppg, RPG and apg

Ty played scared his entire time in a Rockets uniform. It was infuriating every single game.

Don't fall into trap of thinking every thing of value a player does for team or a game shows up in box score. Especially on defensive end

It was one of the largest year to year drop offs that I have ever seen. Dude averaged almost 10 assists with a terrible Denver team in 14-15.

So... What is it not in the box score that Ty Lawson was of so much value doing last season?

He was allegedly sober last season. Pretty sure the soberiety almost killed him.

Agree Ty was bad in Hou but guy saw his minutes cut basically in half and was passing to guys who can't shoot so assists plummeted. Hou really assembled a mess.

Never said he did anything of value. Was commenting on uselessness of PER as it relates to value of player.

Best thing Lawson did in 15-16 was sit on the bench a lot where he can't hurt team.

There are very very few players that have a net positive effect for their team with a per under 10. It has to be someone weird like Bruce Bowen that sucks at FTs and contributes Little to nothing offensively but is excellent defensively. Even No stat hero Shane Battier kept his PER over 10 every year in his prime

Are you using 10 because it is one higher than Lawson last year or just as point of reference?
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Good point of reference and that is higher than Lawson's last year. PER is adjusted so that the league average is 15.

While it is not a end all be all stat and Hollinger (its inventor) admits as such, it is a very good way to compare how players contributed while on the court. Generally, rotational players are 13+. Below 11 is very bad. 27+ = MVP candidate.

Yes, I am aware of how the statistic works. Was just curious for your reason behind choosing 10.
Guitarsoup

Good round number that is terrible on the scale. And you won't be able to find many if any (other than Bowen) rotational players (say top 7 or 8) on good teams with a PER under it.

So when a starting PG has a PER of 9, you can really safely assume he sucked balls.

While not a perfect stat, it is far from "useless."
Good Poster

Danny Green had a PER of 10.49 in 15-16 is a good example.

Enes Kanter was 11th in the league in PER and he is unplayable in games when not paired with very active defensive 2nd big.

Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yep. Green sucked last year. Go read the Spurs thread and you will find lots of people complaining about him all year long.

Again, most players aren't black and white all-offense or no-offense players. There are a few exceptions, but they are few. The stat is limited, but it isn't useless. There really aren't great stats to measure defensive ability that are available to the general public.

2009 was a missed opportunity. That team had talent and we lose McGrady going into the playoffs Yao later in the playoffs.

you are doing exactly what you aren't supposed to do with statistics here to prove your point.
