It's too late for our city, Dirk's the youngest ***** reppin.

Am I crazy for thinking that you maybe need to trade Dirk? Doesn't seem fair to him to expect him to stick around for what's about to go down. Seems like by the time the Mavs are ready to compete for a title he will be too old to be effective. May as well let him go compete for titles somewhere and get something in return.

Perhaps Dirk would rather retire than leave? I don't know his agenda.

Dirk will retire before going elsewhere. He's wired differently than most - doesn't do endorsements, etc.

If Cuban does choose to blow up this team and rebuild with the draft, then include Donny. He's proven to be just an average GM.

Agree. Time for the Nelson era to end.

Yep, agree with moving Donny Nelson out. The organization needs Cuban to do some work and not just throw money at the problems. Question is, which will he do?

Team needs to be blown up, somehow convince Carlisle to stay and help with road mapping this thing out if he so desires. But Cuban needs to find some staff who have good eyes for talent and are more prudent than he is with finances. Again, more work for Cuban.

In no way can DeAndre's antics be placed on Cuban's shoulders. It's unfortunate that the Mavs missed out on another big name free agent, but having someone give you their word, and then back out at the last hour, is 100% on DeAndre

But it seems somewhat naive to get a verbal and not make sure its tight. Haven't you ever seen Jerry McGuire or followed college recruiting? Its on Deandre, but Cuban and Co could have been more proactive to prevent this from happening.

DeAndre's word isn't stronger than oak either, I suppose. Mark and Jerry should grab a drink together and vent

Even as a Rockets fan, I don't know how you can't love and appreciate the passion that Cuban has. I honestly don't know why he has trouble getting free agents to sign with dallas, because he seems like a guy who people would enjoy working for

Yeah, i love some Mavs schadenfreude, but that is just really effing pathetic on the part of Jordan. Piss poor move to not even be a man and tell Cuban he had a change of heart.

So what we learned is that when the times get tough, Jordan hides from the issue instead of confronting it head on. Nobody says that it would be easy to pick up the phone and call Cuban, but when your phone is ringing off the hook because Cuban is trying to find out what is going on, be a man and answer and tell him the truth.

It ultimately boils down to the fact that Dallas has not drafted well (or really even tried to), has given out bad contracts to mid level players, and has made bad trades. Can't blame Cuban for DeAndre not sticking to his word, but the aforementioned reasons DJ might have doubt are on Cuban and Co.

Now Dallas is in a tank mode with little to no trade assets and a real chance that they can't truly begin the rebuild for another year because they could lose their lottery pick in the 2016 draft. Sorry to say it, but Dallas is in as bad of a situation as the Knicks or Lakers a few years ago, if not worse.

It might be time to find a new GM who can lead a rebuild.

I've never understood why Donnie Nelson has kept his job this long. Dude is an amateur.

Agree on Donnie.

**** DeAndre. Hated him when he was here and thought he had reformed. Clearly if he'd rather be 3rd banana on that team, he was not ready to be 1st banana on ours and never will be. Probably a blessing in disguise.

Tough for Chandler, Dirk and especially Wes.

Kudos to Cuban for giving Wes an out if he wanted it.

Think Shawn Bradley and Cuban. Donnie is a holdover from his dad's days as coach, and Cuban feels the need to keep him around and pay, much like he did the human who looks like he came out of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Cuban seems to run the club more as a personal family business, but unfortunately good business decisions are not his strength. His commitment to loyalty is admirable, but it is damning to the Mavs and their fans.

Any chance that this is the opportunity to relieve Nelson of his duties? He hasn't exactly amassed a stellar track record.

Don't kid yourself. Cuban was hoping Wes would take the out. Of course he was going to give him the opportunity to walk.

I think I might drive to Dallas the first time the Clips play there. That should be fun.

This exactly. Overpaying for Wes doesn't make much sense because a Dirk/Parsons/Matthews/Barea team isn't special.

Leave it to the Rockets/Spurs fans to doubt Cuban's motives. Cynicism has no bounds when you hate someone, clearly.

Things can still work out for the Mavs here..Lebron is still a free agent..right?

After sleeping on it, I'm not feeling too bad about entering this next era as a Mavs fan. We've had a freaking great 15 year run (better than 1 other Texas team ). HOFer/all-time great, 2 finals appearance, 1 title, 50 win seasons.

With or w/out Jordan, Dirk wasn't going to get another title here. He just doesn't have that much time. While I'd love for him to retire as a Mav, I wouldn't mind seeing him make one more run with another team.

Perhaps not getting Jordan will be a blessing in disguise. Is he really capable of being THE guy? Let's have our "David Robinson" season, as Cuban said, and find our Tim Duncan/Steph Curry/Anthony Davis to be the cornerstone w/ Parsons and Matthews supporting him.

Initiate tank mode.

If I was in Cuban's place, I wouldn't want to overpay for Matthews when I have no center and no point guard. What Cuban did is the graceful, smart thing. He gave Wes an opportunity to leave, but he is sticking by his word and will honor the deal he gave Wes.

Smart move by Cuban.

I have no team that I'm a fan of. Lebron is my favorite player and I follow him. I like Dirk and I like Cuban.
So good luck lumping me into whatever group you wish to project me on. I'm just looking at the situation realistically.

I'm not saying Cuban is a bad guy for thinking that, but it makes the most sense. Of course he's going to welcome Wes with open arms and embrace him to the fullest extent...but Cuban would have probably been pretty happy if Matthews walked so they could get to work rebuilding completely.

It makes financial sense to let Wes walk, as the linchpin of the deal welched after committing. Spurs/Rockets fans can and will laugh at Mavs expense, it would be the same in reverse.

Cuban may also be well intentioned with the offer to let Wes walk, but the money the Mavs offered is a LOT. Wes can sign with Dallas and probably get paid really well with minimal effort.

If he operated under the Deandre Code, Cuban could have just pulled the deal with Matthews.

Or actually, he wouldn't have "pulled" it. he just never would have sent the contract to Matthews, made a phone call, or return any calls.

If the Mavs want to pick in the top 5 for the next few years then they will easily make that happen. Trading that protected pick to Boston is being overblown. How fast the Mavs get back to the playoffs will depend on ping-pong balls and who is available. Just depends on if they get an Anthony Bennett or Anthony Davis. Not to mention who they get in 2016 free agency. I don't see a 76ers style rebuild. Expect a bad team in 2015-16, a high draft pick and another shot at free agency next year. Depending on the haul they will either punt 2016-17 also or try to contend in the 8/9/10 spots of the West.

The windows in this league are small. I realize there is a lot of gloating but no one knows how this will shake out in the long term or how players will be distributed across the league in 5 years. Even with DeAndre there wasn't exactly a clear path to the top of the conference. He was never going to be Shaq, he is a better version of Tyson Chandler. It's murkier without DeAndre but people need to cut down on the histrionics.

Cuban had no choice. Deandre situation aside, if he just drops Mathews his reputation with future free agents is damaged.

As it stands now, he probably overpaid for a good player coming off an injury that tends to end basketball careers.
