Yep, takes 2 to tango. Would be nice if LAC would take the high road, but he's not signed and they are desperate. I don't blame them for taking a shot at a player that appears to be leaving the door open. If you are still willing to take my calls and meet, you haven't exactly made a decision yet.

I don't blame the Clips at all, but expect some FA rules to change in the future if this goes awry for the Mavs.

Welcome to the world of head fakes and silent commits if this goes down. IE, Houston tells Howard to tell Dallas he's signing there so they pass on Tyson Chandler and he signs elsewhere, then back out at last second a dick over a division opponent.

The ESPN talking heads are all over this, I'm sure. But a very bush league way to do business. What's the point of the verbal commitment?

Similar to college recruiting, a verbal commitment means nothing.

I think you're overblowing it. Rivers was his coach for a year and it's a small league. This is almost certainly a courtesy and nothing more. My guess is that Jordan will reaffirm his commitment to Dallas within an hour of the end of the meeting with something like "It was hard because I have a lot of respect for Rivers and I played in Los Angeles for 7 seasons, but I'm very happy about my move to Dallas and can't wait to take the floor as a Maverick!"

Bad form on him to do this the day before signing.

This isn't high school football recruiting where those kids don't even get paid (*ahem*). Who cares when those kids change their minds. But this is business run by adults. I can't believe the Mavs were just put in this position and I think the NBA needs to close this loophole.

I wouldn't have blamed Jordan for choosing LAC, it made plenty of sense (better team, more $$$ plus getting to hang with Blake in LA). Hell, I would have picked LA and I love the Mavs. But its not fair that the Mavs have been operating under a certain set of assumptions/cap expectations for 5 days now which will put them in a competitive disadvantage.

How is this not tampering? If not, what's to prevent players from "agreeing" to sign with a team to tie up their cap space, and thus sabotage that team?

Also, I'm no lawyer, but don't implied contracts come into play as well?

Allegedly working outside of his agent as well... hope this comes back to burn LAC, whether Jordan is a Maverick or Clipper.

I get the feeling this is the sort of thing that will boil down to: its unethical, but not illegal.

This team cannot properly tank with Wes Matthews on the roster. I'd be telling that dude that his contract is contingent on DJ not being a crawfishing ass.

Last two posts are spot on - it's not cute when there are lots of $$$ riding on the verbal commitment. I'd expect some legal ramifications if it does indeed switch. Mavs would have resigned Chandler with no shot at DJ, etc...
