Seeing a lot of sentiment online of people losing respect for Argentina this World Cup, especially compared to last. From the questionable calls that always seemed to go in their favor, to the players' thuggish behavior on the pitch, Barco acting like an ass during the England game, even Messi got dinged a bit for failing to show up in the final game and then his weak attempt to try to get Cucurella a red card for touching his lips. The icing on top was the Argentina players trying to start fights with Spain after the game. Just poor form all around.

Well he could claim Ronaldo, I suppose, but at this point it's only diehard fanboys who think that. All the neutrals say Messi.

This era of Messi's career is the equivalent of Jordan's Washington Wizards phase.

Neither GOATs performance after getting old diminishes their GOAT status.

this is nothing like Jordan's wizards phase. He just scored 8 goals and had 4 assists in just 8 games in the world's biggest tournament. Since joining Miami in MLS, he's had 59 goals and 41 assists in just 64 matches. Those stats are still insane, even given the lower level of competition.

I'm no Messi stan, but the goat convo isn't debatable. It's nowhere close to the near parity of the lebron vs MJ convo.

I think they've largely stained any of the goodwill they established in 2022. I think to most soccer fans, they almost erased what they did 4 years ago yesterday, and that's not even counting all the silliness leading up to the final. The icing on the cake after the cheap shots and whining and fights started after the match was turning their backs on the trophy presentation. I didn't even know that until I was driving to work this morning. What a POS team and program.

And, Messi may be the true goat, but his lack of leadership was put on full display yesterday. He had every reason and responsibility to ensure his team showed class and he just turned a blind eye.

I thought Messi was the most dangerous of all the Argentine front line. Playing as a lone striker, after ARG went down to 10 men, didn't help

Spain choked them out just like they did every other team during the tournament.
Hard to appreciate that Spain only gave up 1 goal the entire tournament even with one extra round.

Yeah I agree… but Messi isn't a leader. Never has been. I'm pretty sure he's probably an autistic savant. GOAT status in the game, but I wouldn't want to grab a beer with him and I don't view him as any kind of role model.

Messi got goal volume this tourney, but it was largely due to them setting up an entire tactic around him. And this cost them when they finally played a real team (honestly it should've cost them against England too… still stunned how passive they were after the goal).

I said it in group stage… Portugal building their team around CR7 cost them dearly. Way too old and there were better players available to come off their bench. I think it was probably a net gain for Argentina to build around Messi, but it did give them a ceiling. They're an old, mid team in this tourney without him as a talisman.

I'll take losing in the final by a single goal down a man in extra time as a ceiling all day. And, he may have been served up tons of opportunities, but still have to finish. His goals weren't tap ins.

Agreed he does seem to be on the spectrum. But, at this age, if leadership doesn't come naturally…just fake it. It's not hard.

The final exposed Argentina's weaknesses.

When forced to work the ball up the field from the back, they just couldn't do it well very consistently. Their best quality players were up top. Once they got up there they could be absolutely deadly, but getting it there was a struggle all tournament.

They struggled to do it against England, but due to England's absolute boneheadedness they spent the last 40 minutes of the game not even forcing Argentina into overcoming that weakness. They sat back and let Argentina walk the ball up the field and do the only thing they did really well.

They struggled to do it against Switzerland as well... wasn't until Switzerland went down to 10 men and started to hunker that they began to look really dangerous.

Same story against Egypt, really.


I think England-Spain would've been a better matchup.

Watching Spain in that final made me realize what the first couple games the US played in reminded me of. We played VERY similarly to them. We just constantly immediately turned over both teams, especially in the middle third/attacking third.

It's so bizarre that so many players just no showed, I think we arent actually as far away as so many people said when we were all in our feels about the horrific Belgium performance.

Next 3 years will be very interesting. Unless we are certain Poch stays through to the next world cup, we need to actually hire another good coach. (not confident he wouldnt just bail on us 1-2 years into it, and then we have another manager not getting a full run up)

Not a Messi fan girl by any means.
1. Nobody is running up and down the pitch for all 90-120 minutes
2. Especially someone whose primary role is to create goals. The list of players who were relied upon as creative attackers but made it a point to get back and really contribute on defense is probably about as long as the list of drummers for Spinal Tap.
3. Quick research indicates he converts penalties at about 80% for Argentina. Slightly above what's generally considered the average conversion rate for everyone everywhere.
4. I don't think anyone on Argentina played a full game. By and large, they seemed content to wait until they needed to play, and at that point he usually became the fulcrum on which everything moved. It backfired a bit in the Spain match, but good on Espana for that.
