The ref told him to leave the field and he said no, shook his finger in the refs face, and jogged off. The ref just let him stay on

New law change. Straight red. All because players were covering their mouths to keep lip readers from seeing them call each other racial stuff. It's the Vini Jr clause.

On the one hand, yes, soccer has a bunch of silly rules with draconian punishments for "offenses" that don't really offend anyone (Mexico's stupid puto chant, for example).

On the other, the level of racist stuff that gets said in Europe is way outside of the lines of behavior that prevail in the US. No matter how crappy certain fan bases are, we don't have stands full of people making monkey sounds at black players, for example. Rightfully, they are trying to keep Eurotrash hooligans (players and fans alike) from being super racist.

Regardless of how you feel about the rule, they were very clear before the tournament that the "covering the mouth" thing was not going to be tolerated. Stupid player was stupid.
