That was the pre VAR interpretation of even is onsides. No it does not change the toe nail on vs off but is a much more reasonable view and easier for non var to enforce.

This isn't the pre VAR definition of onside. And it doesn't make it any easier to view or enforce. In fact I'll argue that for every referee not backed by a computer, this would be a disaster. We all spend years, literally years training our eyes and mind to recognize a player being offside. The lean. And learning to recognize and see past flash lag. And making this huge change would throw all of that away and make everyone start over and learn to see full daylight instead of what really is a shadow. It's years of muscle memory just thrown away and most of us are pretty good at it. It does absolutely nothing to fix the computer being used at the highest level.

And as I said it would dramatically change the game in that the offensive player would effectively/legally get a huge head start. No defense could afford to allow that to happen as it would create a breakaway and the defender would never catch up. So how would defenses adjust? Most of us thing they would adjust by playing deep sweepers, possibly more than one. If you can't afford to get beat, you play a deep line. It would actually decrease offensive soccer.

So far this game is about as competitive as the infamous Disgrace of Gijon in 1982, when West Germany and Austria colluded to produce a result that would advance their sides and knock Algeria out of the World Cup.

The local paper the next day put the match report in the "Crimes" section.

Three third place teams (South Korea, Scotland, and the winner of Senegal-Iraq, if there is a winner) are guaranteed to have 3 points or less, so the only Paraguay gets eliminated with a draw is for every other group to end up with a 3rd place team with 4 points.

It is technically possible that they could be eliminated with 4 points, but if I'm calculating right the following match results would have to go one way for it to happen:

Uruguay def. Spain
Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia do not draw
Iran def. Egypt
Algeria and Austria draw
DR Congo def. Uzbekistan
Croatia draw or defeat Ghana

Gomez of Paraguay picks up a 2nd yellow for this group stage and will be suspended for the round of 32, if Paraguay makes it there.

A weak shot on goal from both teams in the past couple of minutes-which is wild excitement compared to most of this nonsense.

And mercifully, it is over with a scoreless draw.
