Fun Fact about the World Cup:

No World Cup-winning team has ever won the World Cup with a foreign coach in charge. Every single World Cup-winning manager has been a native of the country that won the World Cup.

So, if we want to win the World Cup, we must hire an American.

And I'm on record as saying that we'll definitely hire an Englishman considering the man in charge of the hiring process is English and he just hired an Englishwoman to run the USWNT.

Well, no team outside of UEFA or CONMEBOL has ever won it either, so we're already doomed (by that logic).

In truth the two are somewhat related… other associations besides UEFA and CONMEBOL don't have strong domestic leagues where domestic coaches can be groomed for success.

I bet there's also a really strong correlation between WC winners and % of their players who developed at domestic academies (and we suck at that).

Given all the structural barriers we already have to overcome, we ought to get the best coach possible, rather than hamstringing ourselves to the domestic pool.

Rafa Benitez is supposedly interested in the job. Will be interesting to see who we end up with.

Klopp's not going to take the US job, especially now England job is open.

I'm quite curious what he's going to do. If he's sincere about needing a break, he won't talk to us or England. I'm guessing he waits till 2026 and takes over after that World Cup and coaches his own country's team.

Yeah given that Nagelsmann has already announced he wants to go back to club ball after 2026, Klopp to Germany seems inevitable.

Also… if the rumors are to be believed, England is supposedly willing to go with an interim coach while Pep rides the last year of his contract, and then hire Pep next summer.

Yeah I definitely see that scenario.

That would be super spicy match between England and Spain.

It would be. And perhaps Spain is courting him too right now, and that's why they keep low-balling de la Fuente - to make him cheaper to buyout when Pep is available next summer.

On the other hand, considering he's Catalan, I wonder if he'd even pick Spain over England if he had an offer from both and the financial packages were similar. I could be wrong, but I feel like there's more glory to be had in terms of global reputation if he could actually "bring it home" with England. Spain has gotten their accolades.

I'll just add that it would be really fun watching Klopp and Pep battle each other internationally if they move on to Germany/England/Spain. I wonder if they've discussed the possibility.

Do they have time to do that? Qualifying is coming up and they need to practice under Pep to understand what he wants them to do.

Still an improvement from the last 6 years.

I watched a good portion of the LAFC v RSL match last night and it was interesting seeing the quality on the pitch. Probably because I just spent the last 2 weeks watching the EURO and Gold Cup but the quality of play really stood out. Sloppy passing, slow reactions, and poor ball control were three things that jumped off the screen. I'm not going to lay that at the feet of Cherundolo but to points previously made, the MLS is not a high-quality league, so setting our sights on a coach from their ranks seems like a low bar for a Federation that pays lip service to setting lofty goals. I'm prepared to be disappointed by USSF, yet again.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Yeah it sounds like Viera, which I am ok with.

Vieira hardly qualifies as MLS.

But I'm also not sure he qualifies as being a good coach. I know all coaches get sacked, but he just got sacked in consecutive seasons… which makes him unemployed and therefore a budget pick with no buyout. USSF going cheap if they get him.

At least the other two are good at the level they're at (and better than Ggg ever was).

I suppose Vieira has skins on the wall as a player with France, so he knows what right is supposed to look like. And the international game is different… lots of successful international coaches were mediocre/bad at the club level. That said, most joined their international team as an assistant or youth coach and climbed the ladder (Low and de La Fuente being examples I can think of quickly).

What a drop in excitement and expectation level. If this is the case, spend the money and get a guy we know can coach at this level. Maybe that Jurgen guy; don't forget him!

Vieira did coach Richards at Crystal Palace and gave him his shot if I remember correctly.

At least he has premier league credentials.

Would not be excited with a vieira hire. At least give us a winning manager. Experience doesn't matter if it's not winning experience. It's not like he's coached at terrible clubs where .500 ball is a miracle. We deserve better than that resume. Having said that, he's still better than Gregg

Maybe a miracle hire will happen but I assume the Fed will screw this up again. I don't think they'll pay for a top coach, sure hope I'm wrong.

This isn't even a choice. Benitez all day every day. Vieira sucks as a coach.

Actually, in light of some research I just did, I'm changing my mind. I still don't think Benitez is strong as a candidate, but I'd take him - and certainly take him over Vieira.

Idk, it seems like folks are holding out for a "highly successful" coach and I just don't think there are realistic options that fit that description. You'd have to pay $10 million to lure a proven guy to leave his European club or national team post and that's not going to happen I don't think. And sure, that troll account will trot out nearly decade-old MLS results to show who is and who isn't qualified but that's not in anyway related to how this job will be assigned. Applicants (who are all sort of mid-table club guys from what I've seen) will get to lay out their vision for where they'll take the USMNT. Fed leadership will consider their careers and the feasibility of the plan they're laying out and their systems of play and then weigh that against the risk and cost they'll bring with them.

Klopp ain't coming. Pep ain't coming. In fact the closest I could see is getting to some big, proven, splash international hire is Southgate and I know this fanbase would melt down if he's announced. We need to consider more than just records or trophies when evaluating the names on the list.

This fanbase will melt down regardless. I do not want Viera, his style reminds me of Gregg, lots of possession with no clear understanding of how to create dangerous opportunities.
