Awesome might be a stretch, but it's certainly better than trying to mimic Euro club names. The best MLS names are the ones where they didn't bother playing that game (Sounders, Revs, etc).

I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't love the ones that sound like 70s NASL teams (unless they actually were 70s NASL teams like the Timbers and Sounders) but I also don't like the ones that are weird ripoffs of Euro style and don't make sense (looking at you Salt Lake). The Dynamo works for me because of the energy hub in Houston, Minnesota United works because of the twin cities, even Philly I think makes sense.

Dynamo is one of the worst offenders IMO… all the clubs in Europe with that name were historically athletic clubs for Soviet security and secret police forces (to include KGB). Amongst all the Euro monikers, there was absolutely no good reason to use that name.

I love the NASL names because that was the soccer I grew up on and the names were so unique to sports at that time.

The homage MLS played to that style of name was really cool in my mind, and kept the soccer style of US different and unique. Names like Rapids, Burn, Galaxy, etc are just a unique US soccer brand and i personally love it.

Of course, I collect and hunt old NASL pennants and paraphernalia so I am a bit odd anyway.

I didn't know that about the euro dynamos. I always assumed they were energy related. Maybe I bought into some Pr bull**** when they picked the name.

Of course I'm still pissed they don't go with Houston 1836
