Don't forget that most of Mexico's up and coming youth players are playing in the Olympics. Both the USA and Mexico were running parallel teams, just for different reasons. Not taking anything away from the win, but the Mexico depth is in Japan right now

How many of those in Japan would have started last night?

After losing Nations League, Mexican fans dismissed the loss and said they'll focus everything on the Gold Cup. Now that they've also lost the Gold Cup, it now has become, "Yeah, no biggie. The Olympics is more important."

That may be, but of those on the Olympic roster, only 3 would make the team that Mexico trotted out: Ochoa, Lainez and Martin. Coincidentally those three were all on the Nations League roster as well. Maybe you could throw Antuna in as well. Don't remember if he was on the Nations League roster or not.

Quote:

Goalkeepers
Guillermo Ochoa, Sebastian Jurado, Luis Malagon

Defenders
Cesar Montes, Johan Vasquez, Jesus Alberto Angulo, Jorge Sanchez, Vladimir Lorona, Adrian Mora, Luis Romo

Midfielders
Diego Lainez, Sebastian Cordova, Carlos Rodriguez, Roberto Alvarado, Uriel Antuna, Joaquin Esquivel, Fernando Beltran, Erick Aguirre, Jesus Ricardo Angulo

Forwards
Henry Martin, Alexis Vega, Eduardo Aguirre
Mexico's Olympic Roster

Not that I follow Mexican soccer but I don't know a thing about any of the players except the ones I listed.

Mexico's team last night mostly was the same team that played in the Nations League final which was theoretically the best squads from each nation. The only differences were goalkeeper (Talavera instead of Ochoa), center forward (Funes Mori instead of Antuna), and a midfielder (Dos Santos instead of Carlos Rodriguez) because those players are at the Olympics, and Chucky Lozano was out because he got hurt earlier in the tournament

Several of their players who came on as subs like Henry Martin, Diego Lainez, Luis Romo are also on the Olympic team.

The US team was almost all players down the depth chart, while the Mexico team was mostly the starters, but missing some starters and some key depth.

Also, is Mexico actually upset with Martino? It'd be hilarious if they fired a coach who basically so far won every single game except two games with the United States that Mexico probably could have won, but just didnt.

Wait, are Mexican fans actually now discounting the Gold Cup loss? The very little I've seen from the Mexican press (very, very little) was pretty harsh regarding their performance. And I did see one mention that even an Olympic gold wouldn't do much to alleviate the fear the US has surpassed Mexico. But my exposure to Mexico fans is pretty limited, if not non-existent.

Well, I got to experience my first US/Mexico game

Really hard to describe the Mexican fans.....pretty damn impressive. 80k in the stands and probably another 20k wanting tix wandering the strip.

Allegiant is beautiful....I did kind of want to see Mexico score to experience that....

I got lucky with tix...but holy cow.....the average ticket price was probably $450 everytime I glanced at ticketmaster (they were more on stubhub).....I mean holy ****

Brazil dumped Mexico out of the Olympics today. Scoreless game and Brazil dominated the shootout.

Heard on the Scuffed Podcast that it'll be around Aug 12th.

Now if Mexico chokes the bronze medal game, it would be a perfect summer, for USMNT fans.

So if we manage to absolutely wreck the Octa is there a chance of making it into Pot 1? We'd probably need a Euro power to tank their qualifying campaign and win out at home (maybe even go undefeated on the road outside of Azteca) to have a shot so I'm not holding my breath.
JJxvi

They'll just have to change the ranking system at the last minute.

Agree with you that don't think we'd get enough points in the Ocho to get into Pot 1. I just don't see how we'd over take the likes of Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, England, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal and Germany.

The USA will already be ahead of Germany. Germany is projected to fall to around 16th.

After the 2018 debacle I just care about qualifying. If we are able to do that, let the chips fall where they may.

https://football-ranking.com/

If you google 'Projected FIFA rankings', this is the first hit. It's updated daily based on the calculation method FIFA uses. It shows we'll be 9th, a couple spots ahead of Mexico who will stay at 10th.

Only Italy gained more points than we did since the last rankings (~102 points) and moved up only 2 spots (from 7 to 5). We gained ~92 points and moved up 11 spots, from 20 to 9. So even if we win every game in WC qualifications, it will be pretty hard to move up many unless the teams ahead of us have some pretty big upsets.

Will be weird to see but Germany has been kind of bad lately.. recent examples being losing to Spain 6-0 and 2-1 to North Macedonia.

Looking at 11-20 on that site, I'd probably take Uruguay and maybe Denmark over us, but that's about it. Strange to think we're a legitimate top 10 team in the world right now

FIFY

Love the Top 10 ranking but I'd hold off getting too enthused about it. Plenty of strong teams in that 11-20 range that would be toss-up matches, at best. What I DO love is that we have a lot of depth and a lot of players competing in top-tier leagues. This bodes well for the continued development of the USMNT.
