Yeah I think we can all agree that Berhalter is trying to implement a very complicated system with personnel that can't quite make it work

I think it's a common mistake to assume that ineffectiveness of a system of play is always due to a lack of player understanding. There's obviously some of that, but there's quite a few other factors that can keep a game plan from being executed. For one, sometimes players just don't do what they are expected (and are typically able) to do. There's also the whole problem of playing a team full of good players and a coach that also plans to keep you from doing what you want to do.

I've heard the "this is the dumbed-down version of CB's system" too and I'm sure there's some truth to that, but I think we're more likely seeing limits from player pool and lack of time to gel and adjust to roles. It'll get better I think.
