Tonight is Senior Night at Ellis Field!`The Aggies celebrate their seniors and take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 7:30PM.
Mississippi State has a horrible soccer history. You know how you only have to finish in the Top Ten in SEC play to qualify for the SEC Tournament? Well, Mississippi State has only played twice in the SEC Tournament - in 2004 and 2001. Obviously, they lost both matches.
Mississippi State has a losing record to every other SEC team. A&M is the only SEC squad that the Bulldogs haven't defeated. A&M is 6-0 all-time versus Mississippi State. The Aggies eeked out a 2-1 win last season against the SEC doormat.
Texas A&M gave Mississippi State a 17 year head start in SEC play and the Aggies passed the Bulldogs in all-time SEC wins in 2016 - after just 57 SEC matches. A&M is 53-16-5 all-time in SEC play and the Bulldogs are 43-177-18.
Mississippi State has never made the NCAA Tournament. Obviously.
Ok, onto this season. Mississippi State might not be as terrible this season. Their 7-0 non-conference record might be a apparition. Even in previous seasons of failure, Mississippi State has been able to post undefeated streaks against the likes of SFA, Southern Miss, and South Alabama - and that's what they did this year.
However, when it comes to conference play they are 2-3-1 on the season. Conference play started with an expected 0-3 loss to Auburn, but the Bulldogs rebounded big with a 2-1 win over South Carolina. Mississippi State also posted a tie with Florida and had a 5-2 win in their last game. That's their most goals scored in a conference game in school history.
So maybe this is a different team? Perhaps this squad could do the unthinkable and actually make the SEC Tournament.
If we're looking at individual players, Zakirah McGillivary and MaKayla Waldner lead the team in goals with 7 each. Altogether, the Bulldogs have outscored conference opponents 30-10. Mississippi State has been outscored, however, in conference play 8-7.
Rhylee DeCrane mans the goal for MSU. She has allowed 9 goals on the season while making 35 saves (.795 save %). Mississippi State has shutout opponents 7 times this season as they approach their all-time single season record of 9 shutouts.
They won't get one tonight.
