I remember that like it was yesterday. I was home for Christmas break and when I woke up, my mom said "you need to read the paper, there's some bad news". The first thing I thought was that one of the players had been hurt or arrested or some such. But when I read about Rev I was just heartbroken. Yeah sure part of it was because Rev was the only mascot to never have been kidnapped, but mostly for Jim Lively and the fact that it happened on our class' watch ('96).

Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied with knowin' I got no one else to blame

Did the kidnapping have bad consequences for Lively? I imagine he would have been given some grief for Reveille going missing under his watch.

did'nt we return the favor by cutting the longhorn out of the turf before the '94 game in Austin?

I think some Baylor guys were responsible for that. They were also responsible for the horns "possibly" being in the t.u. frathouse that topped Bonfire that year. Yup, Baylor guys.

I don't really know. I'm sure some guys probably overreacted to the news, and I'm sure Mr. Lively had to deal with some unpleasantness, but were there actual repercussions coming from Texas A&M like an expulsion? That would be hard for me to imagine.

Someone actually kidnapped a hornfrog?

I went to high school with Neil Sheffield at an rather unusual boarding school in Denton. I'm sure Lawdawg95 has heard of TAMS.

Neil and I were both in the class of 92 at the Academy. When Rev was stolen, word got around pretty quickly to all of my TAMster friends about who had done it.

While we were at TAMS, Neal borrowed my linemans pliers one afternoon and I didn't ask why. He and some others were caught that night removing the Christmas lights from the roof of the student union. I never did get my pliers back.

Alex,
of course A&M didn't do anything to punish him, officially or otherwise.

I'm sure it doesn't take too big a leap of faith to imagine that as the first and only mascot corporal to 'lose' Rev that he faced some repercussions from the upperclassmen in his outfit.

Reville has sucked ever since we went to the Collie for the breed standard. Rudders dog "Ranger" would have made a much better mascot.

Every one of us in D-2 laughed our arses off after that one.

But...but I thought A&M didn't matter and we weren't worth it because we weren't their 'real' rival.
AlexNguyen
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Carry a chip around on your shoulder much? Of course A&M is a rival. While OU currently is a bigger rival for us in football, there's still no question Texas loves to beat the Aggies. We even have the special chant 'Poor Aggies' for you, so the 'hate' is clearly there.

UT has lots of rivalries: OU, A&M, Arkansas, Nebraska. The OU and A&M rivalries probably are the top 2 right now. Back in the sixties, the Razorback game was numero uno.

Are you serious? Haha...no.

Just see a lot 'horns acting like A&M doesn't matter because we haven't won much in football recently - and because "they're Texas" they're above having a real rivalry in this state. I see that attitude more often than not.

It's just interesting to hear of a story like that since a lot modern-day 'horn fans try to act like A&M isn't worth 'lowering' themselves to acting like a true rivalry.

Bad bull. I hope something bad happens to that guy. It would be different if he had pulled this crap in the 50's, 60's, or early 70's. In the 70's a pact was made that this kind of stuff would not happen again, but one self centered teasipper had to have his way.

A can of worms was opened by this guy. I'm actually quite surprised nothing has happened to bevo since then. When it does happen, and it will in time, the sips can thank Mr 'I think I'll take things into my own hands' for it.

He's going to regret coming out with this story.

Um, some of you are scary with your Fatal Attraction predictions. Bevo is actually owned by John and Better Baker of Liberty Hill, who I think are Aggies. They're nice enough to loan UT their steer, and I'm sure they would hate to see any harm come to him.

I'm sure there are a lot more teasippers who would be distressed by this action than the folks who actually own him.

As I said, it is Neil Andrew Sheffield who is to blame. Everything was hunky dory until he decided it was such a cool thing to do, so when it happens to bevo, we'll see how many sips think it's still cool.
AlexNguyen
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If someone kidnaps Bevo and returns him unharmed, I'd say it's a harmless prank. If he's injured or killed, I'd say the people who did it should be prosecuted. A rivalry is suppposed to be good, harmless fun, not Baghdad-central.

By the way, read this article. It sure sounds like the Bakers are fond of Bevo.

quote:

The Bakers are kind folks who also owned the previous Bevo, who served for 16 years before retiring last season on their ranch, where he still hangs out.

They absorb all of Bevo's expenses and have a handshake agreement with the university for his use. Only two things really bother them: Critics who wonder if he is growing big with drugs, and accusations that they sedate him for games.

"He's never been on the juice," John T. Baker says, adding that the current Bevo was a show champion. "And he's been trained to be docile."

All this, and guess who's coming to dinner? Not Bevo. Not anymore.

The biggest perk of being the biggest mascot is, unlike his football team today, this Bevo will not be slaughtered.

"Oh no, we're going to keep him," Betty Baker says. "That's our baby. We want his head here."
