Teaching my little Tigers (kids) the words to the Aggie War Hymn. A few questions to help in our lessons.

1 )Do you sing both verses or just the second verse two times?

2) Also, when I heard some Ags singing the War Hymn at Clemson after the "Saw" part and at the end they said something like "it will be a sad night in Austin tonight."

I don't see that in the verses anywhere. Is it correct or just something these guys added after a few cold ones?

1. Ok, there are two verses to the War Hymn, but at spoorting events we only sing the second one. We do sing it twice.

2. The last part of the War Hymn goes:
Late one night when the t-sips were in bed
Ol' Sul Ross took a lantern in the shed
The Aggie kicked it over, he winked his eye and said:
"There'll be a hot time in Austin tonight!"

Hope this helped.

Sing it just like this:

Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!
Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!

(Sing this twice)
Good-bye to Texas University.
So long to the Orange and White.
Good luck to the dear old Texas Aggies,
They are the boys who show
the real old fight.
The eyes of Texas are upon you.
That is the song they sing so well,
So, good-bye to Texas University,
We're goin' to beat you all to --

I didn't say it was taught at fish camp. I said it was fish campish. Or that most of the people who sing that went to fish camp.

To be technical, that is not part of the Aggie War Hymn. The band just sometimes plays "Hot Time" after they play the War Hymn with no break in between.

Sing both verses and God willing it'll catch on.

There are very few of us that sing both versus. I remember, though, at the Nebraska game in Lincoln a few years ago there were two other Aggies singing both verses along with me! They turned around and were happy that they weren't the only two. My old roommate was with me and he sings both verses as well.

Yes, we are in the minority, but with more and more folk singing both verses (except during the t.u. games) it'll catch on....

Hey Tiger,

Glad to see you're raising your kids right. I must admit that Clemson has become my second favorite team (even though your coach is a Bowden). I frequented your campus when I lived in the ATL and loved the place. Glad to have you over here and BTHO Kentucky.

The music for "Hot Time" has always been a part of the song. Sometimes, it is not played because of time concerns. Sometimes it is played on its own, like after a touchdown.

The words are a fairly recent invention, I'd guess from about the 1990s.

A great story about the music and origins of the Aggie War Hymn by Patrick Harris '69 can be found at

War Hymn History:

As written by Private J.V. "Pinky" Wilson while standing guard on the Rhine River during World War I, there was originally only one verse for the War Hymn. Later, after the War Hymn became popular, the administration approached Wilson and requested an additional verse from Wilson. He refused initially, but after repeated requests, he acquiesced. In order to popularize this verse (written in the 50s or 60s, not sure which...my memory is hazy on that one), the administration published it as the FIRST verse in that year's football program, much to the chagrin of Wilson. Wilson promptly took back his support of the new second verse (improperly published as the first).

"Hot Time" has always been part of the War Hymn, though not the words. It is based on a popular song about the great Chicago fire (as is the melody of many schools created in the 1800s; t.u. uses the melody from "I've been working on the railroad":

Late one night, when we were all in bed
Old Lady Leary took a lantern to the shed
and when the cow kicked it over she turned around and said
It'll be a hot time in Chicago tonight

This was all related to me in San Antonio in mid 2003 by noted Texas A&M historian John A. Adams, Jr.

EDIT: fixed spelling error
