I remember the game vividly. I heard the game on the radio then saw a replay of the game on a local station. What a game! I remember listening on the radio and hoping that Permian could limit Arlington's first downs. The pace f the game got odd at that time because I never had any worries that Arlington could score. Most of that had to do with the fact that Permian had held them in check for the most part in the 4th quarter. But I always wondered if the situation had an impact on the playcalling of the game.

Aside from the John Tyler/Plano East matchup of the '90's I think this was one of the best games ever played at Texas Stadium.

I'm admittedly a little late to this thread, but can someone explain "Mojo" to me? It's not the mascot and has nothing to do with panthers, but it was plastered all over everything in the film. It was a fantastic movie and I'm buying the book because of it.

Cotton79 or Czar_iv probably have a better understanding of this term, but Mojo essentially was the name given to the team because of the mystique that they carried. The sight of the big P on the helmet and the all black uniforms was intimidating to opposing teams. The cliche statement "before the game started they were already up by two touchdowns," comes to mind. It's hard for me to explain, so hopefully one of the aforementioned guys can elaborate more on it.

I am a '91 grad from Marshall. I was a little pissed at how they potrayed that part in the movie, but I did think it was a good football movie.

The '88 Marshall team was a very good team. Odell Beckham, Benny Valentine, Stan Thomas, and a few others were some of the best to ever play at Marshall.

The game between Permian and Marshall took place on a Saturday with a humidity level of about 95%. It was unbearable! Marshall won that game 13-12, and went on to an undefeated regular season. I remember them rolling through the first few rounds setting up a meeting with Dallas Carter. We actually played Carter in Waco. That Carter team was bigger and faster and knocked the crap out of Marshall. The game came down to a play where Jessie Armstead was used as a tight end and was left open in the endzone. I remember listening to Dennis Parker during baseball practices tell our coach about a call he received. When the UIL stripped Carter of the title and awarded it to Judson (I think that is who it was), the Judson coach called him and told him that Marshall was the best team in the state that year and should have been able to play on. That was one of the best high school teams I have ever seen come out of East Texas.

The next season, we played Permian twice. First time we flew out there to Odessa and lost; then faced them again in the playoffs. The Marshall QB suffered a broken leg in that game.

As for the "other" state title game in '90 when we won state, there is a little story there. After Marshall won the title game, and Aldine won their title game, there was some interest from business's to have a final game. Of course the UIL would not allow it, and neither team could play. I remember the guys I played baseball with who played football talking about getting the entire football team together and meeting the Aldine team halfway. Coach Parker put a stop to that one!

What team did Marshall lose to in 1990? I remember them winning state over Judson, but didn't they lose a game by a fairly large margin? I want to say it was to Waco but I could be wrong. For some reason I recall Waco beat either Marshall or Judson that year rather easily.

It was Waco, if I remember correctly. We also started out very slow that year. We lost one of the top linebackers in the state - Londell Johnson. He and Tremayne Green were supposed to be the best LB combo in the state. Green went on to OU, and Londell would have been a
D-1 player as well. That team had to come togther quickly and rely more on the offense.
