I might be bringing up an old subject but did anybody notice former Horn Lee Jackson played one of the players on Permian's squad? I know not Aggie related but we did recruit him at once.

Roy Williams WR for Texas was also a coach for Permian. A couple of Ags played on the other teams that were featured in the movie.

Williams was actually a coach for Lee. I found that to be ironic.

Did it bother anybody else that they were depicting the 80s or early 90s and all the players were wearing those brand new helmets from Schutt?

Did yall also notice the real Bobbie Miles was one of the Permian coaches. He's standing right next to the actor Boobie Miles in the championship game at half time.

that movie is so far from being accurate its crazy...i dont know why they just didnt make it like it was it was still a good story...

That year Permian flew to Marshall to play us (as opposed to playin at Permian in the movie) and we beat them 14-13 i believe but in the movie they have us losing like 45-10...I guess the biggest thing that pissed me off is we are the Mavericks and they called us the dawgs in the movie...

im from Marshall so sorry about the rant, it was still a good movie though...

tam,

I attended Permian in the 70's and actually attended the Carter game in '88. I understand what you're saying about the inaccuracies, but at the very end - I mean the VERY end! - the movie credits give the obligatory message of:

"while this movie is based on a real experience, parts of it have been fictionalized... " (something like that)

I'm guessing that we are all responding to the movie's DVD, which was just released. Given that, it's a bit disheartening to see some of the scenes cut from the final big screen version. In particular, I would have liked to have seen the one about the announcement of Dallas Carter being disqualified from the playoffs due to an ineligible player (grades). Yet, I guess that the film's decision-makers felt that it did not add enough to the movie's storyline, which was the key Permian players (a good approach, if you ask me!). Still, I remember the uproar that the legal action caused each week of the playoffs as Carter marched onward. In the end, they lost the championship due to forfeit to Converse Judson that year... what a sad day for all of TX high school football to have a state championship game be "officially" listed with a 1-0 score.

By the way, some say that the Permian team the following year (State Champs in 1989) was the best ever, but they must not have seen the 1972 State Champs team. Six all-staters, I believe. An unbelievable team!

Gig'em, Aggies!

Yeah Permians 89 team was very good...they knocked a very good Marshall team out of the playoffs that year in a good game, the core players from that Marshall team in 89 went on to win the State Championship in 90...

Isn't Marshall in the movie supposed to be Midland High?

I saw it for first time a couple of days ago, and thought it was a really good movie as well. While I noticed all of the changes from the book, I still got wrapped up in the story and enjoyed it. In my opinion, a very well-done account of Texas high school football.

I was very disappointed overall but I am sure that the way the people are in West TX about their HS football is fairly accurate.

No, you are thinking of Abilene Cooper. The movie had Cooper involved in the three way tie and coin flip instead of Midland High. How changing that makes the movie better I am not sure.

Some of the footage was taken at actual games from the 2003 season. Some of the players are also shown wearing Under Armour and games are played on field turf. Neither were available in the 80s or 90s.

Marshall did beat Permian in 1988 in the second game of the year 13-12 and it was at Marshall. And yes the team in the movie was really Midland High.

The other thing I didn't like about it was that in the movie Permian was destroyed by Abilene. Nowhere near true. Abilene and Abilene Cooper were not good teams back then. Permian only lost two games that year in the regular serason and both were by a point, as Lee beat them 22-21.

The coin toss involved Permian, Lee and Midland High and I remember seeing it on tv. Nowhere near as dramatic as on the film. Lee coach Earl Miller simply asked in his West Texas accent, "is that a tails?" to the Midland High coach. Midland high actually beat Lee that year and had the best record of the three teams. Bad break for them.

The real game with Carter was not as epic as the movie made it out to be either. More of a defensive struggle in Austin, not Houston.

On a side note, Carter actually beat Marshall the week before, preventing a rematch, The next season, Permian beat Marshall twice, once at Ratliff and then in the semifinals.

I thought the movie was freaking horrible. I was very dissapointed.

The book is one of the best books I have ever read.

Ya'll chill out. The best scene for me was where the famous 3 way coin flip was shot....right inside the Southside Meat Market BBQ joint in Elgin. Ate lots of hot gut there over the years and laughed out loud in the theater when I saw it. HS football is one thing, good BBQ in the big scheme of things is MUCH more important......LOL

yep. Permian actually beat Arlington Lamar in the quarterfinals at Ratliff in '88. And then again at Texas Stadium in the quarters in '89. ...and then again in '91, in a game between the #1 (Lamar) and #2 (Permina) teams in the nation --- in the small school 5A bracket --- in the SECOND round of the playoffs! If you ever wondered why Eddie Peach has never won a state title, look no further...

While that Marshall team was winning the "state title" in 1990, the real title game was being played between Aldine and Arlington Lamar at the Dome. Oh well, that's what we get for having these arbitrarily divided divisions. Glad we no longer have those stupid coin flips or ties in state championship games, or penetrations/first downs, but 11 state champions? Gimme a break!

The situation with Marshall being the "Dawgs" and not the Mavericks was that the filmmakers used the Permian-Midland High game for game footage, instead of having to round up a bunch of red Mavericks jerseys.

I first read that book in 4th or 5th grade (probably not age appropriate but I enjoyed it), and as someone who is a stickler for accuracy and grew up watching Abilene tv coverage of that district, I found plenty of inaccuracies in the movie.
-San Angelo Central was in District 4-5A as well and did not make the playoffs as opposed to the brackets shown on the movie
-Midland High was in the coin toss
-Abilene Cooper was terrible and got drilled by Permian
-Boobie got hurt in a scrimmage with Amarillo Palo Duro
-The game with Carter in the semis was a miserable, soggy game in Austin
-I could provide a two page list, but I digress

While not true to Permian's actual season, I thought it was a great football movie, and as some of the ex-players said, it wasn't made to be a documentary.

For those that bought it, is the DVD worth the money?

Permian actually beat Lamar in the 3rd round of the playoffs in '91. Lamar had big Shawn Walters toting the rock for him. I believe he ended up at USC.

I read the book in around the 7th grade and enjoyed it then. Who was the Marshall running back who received mucho attention in the book (but none in the movie)? I wanna say Odell something. Odell James rings a bell, but I think that was the QB for Aldine Macarthur and Baylor in the 90's.
