This article points out that Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed is respected by SEC coaches but some think he tries to be a "true" QB more than he should.

Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed under fire from SEC defensive coordinators

"He still thinks he's a true quarterback, and we want him to, like, keep thinking that way," another coordinator said. "He doesn't really want to run, but when he does, it's the scariest part."

And while Reed does indeed have all the tools to be successful and one of the Top QBs in college football,

even while some coaches and critics don't believe or respect that,

I think this is one example of why his using his legs more in 2026 will eventually lead him and this Aggie football team to more success.

And I also think OC Wiggins (and Coach Elko) is smart enough to take advantage of that part of a skill set that is the "scariest part" to opposing coaches and players.

I think it was Klein that thought he was a true QB and not necessarily Marcel.

No, not ability to run, but the DECISION(S) to run. He needs to run more when needed to pick up chunk plays, move the chains, and avoid negative plays. That comes down to decision making and know when to pull it and run. His best games he has been as dangerous on the ground as passing from the pocket.

Klein tried to make Reed too much of a pocket passer last season and forced the long ball at the wrong times.

Reed needs to be running the RPO more, more quick passes and roll out a lot more.

Something tells me Wiggins will utilize Reeds strengths.

This is what they did to Johnny his sophomore season also. I don't understand coaches who limit their players strengths

Except Johnny met expectations and could pass the ball accurately. He won back to back Heismans, but it was stolen from him the second year.

Reed's a string bean and it's a long season. If he gets hurt, we're done. As frustrating as it is, limiting his running likely gives us the best shot at making the playoffs.

I'm hoping we see a big progression from him from last year to this year. His biggest place where he needs to develop is in the minimal aspect of the position. It's his third year of playing, and if he progresses exponentially like he did last year from the previous year and he takes that bigger exponential step for this year like you should, and really grasp the mental aspect of it, he's gonna have a pretty high ceiling. He needs to be a better overall rounded quarterback and boost his NFL stock up because he's gone after this year. The only other factor that could hold him back is of our old line is really a lot worse than what all of us are hoping for.

I say cut him loose and see what happens. Multi year starter with ability to hurt opponents with his feet. Trust in him and see where it goes. Can't worry about him getting hurt . He's been durable and just like every other team if he goes down it's next man up. If you get good leads in early season games pull him and get the young QB's some game experience but other than that let the man eat. He has the potential to be very effective. If he burns teams with his feet it's going to open up the passing game . If his passing game is effective it's going to open up opportunities for the running game by both him and the rest of the rushing cadre'. If the OL develops and you can run the ball without him running then that's great But history says the extra qb rushing threat is definitely a nice option to have against better defenses.

If the OL develops reasonably quickly I believe there is a ton of potential here. Jmo , the floor is a serviceable offense and the ceiling is a kick ass offense. I think the defense will be good as well. Team could be better than last year's team. Record may or may not reflect that . Schedule appears to be tougher on paper .

As I remember Haynes King was also a string bean until he transfered to Ga. TECH.

I agree that he needs to run more, but I don't think it needs to be designed runs. It's more knowing when to pull it down and take off, which he struggles with. He usually holds it too long and by the time he scrambles the window is closed.

That's the part I think you will see more of this year.

Marcel's hesitation last year should alleviate with another year's experience under his belt.

And that will be the scary part for opposing defenses.

There is a big difference between a QB that can scramble out of trouble and one that is a running QB. Vince Young was a running QB. He was never going to be smart enough to run anything more than a single read passing attack, but was big enough to effectively run it. Reggie McNeal and Stephen McGee were QB's that could scramble but stuck with a coach who thought that meant we should run the single wing. Trying something similar to Vince Young with McNeal and McGee just beat them up and robbed them of development. I really hope we don't do the same with Reed.

We don't really need many designed runs. Most of his running should be opportunistic.

Marcel needs to be fish Reggie against OU. Run when it's there. Air it out. Except, take the check down.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Marcel can be a Heisman finalist if he can hit 65% of his passes and rush for 500+ yards along with 9+ wins on this schedule.

Hopefully, this coaching staff recognizes that and will selectively use his legs for the big games. No reason they shouldn't. We probably beat Miami last year if they start zone reading the crap out of the Miami pass rush. I only saw them run it once all day!

Last year we didn't have any strong viable QB2 if Reed ever went down. Hart was still a true freshman. He's looking like a strong legitimate QB2 option now. This may be the first year in a while that we have real depth at QB with a legitimate QB1 / QB2 combo.

Hopefully now that we have more depth, the coaching staff will allow Reed to scramble more. I know Reed's made comments in the past that he'd get in trouble with the coaching staff if he scrambled too much (to avoid injury). He said as much in an interview with JFF this spring. I suspect we'll see Reed use his legs more this fall.

I think Brady grew up a lot last season. Billy recently said maybe about a month ago that Brady is good enough to start for a lot of SEC teams. Last year as a fallback and just try to be prepared in case Brady wasn't ready as QB two if Marcel had gone down, you may not remember, but they had Zeno, which was a fifth or six year quarterback in college. I think we got him from UAB or somewhere like that.

You bring in QB2 and hope Reed's not seriously hurt. Reed had the 3rd most rushing attempts by QB in the SEC last year so it's not like he hasn't been through the wars . He's pretty good at avoiding big hits and he's also been durable .

Every team has the same issue . You're not going to optimize success if you reign in one of your best weapons because your'e afraid he may get hurt . It comes with the territory. Need to be smart about it. It shouldn't be Fran's offense where he ran McGee 30x a game but if you have an easy opportunity to move the chains or score take it.

Lamar in college had 30lbs and 2 inches on Reed. I get why the staff wanted to try to get him operating out of the pocket when we could.

If they are going to run marcel more, then get the backup QB's some reps in the non-conference games.

Right. Marcel isn't the biggest QB, and anyone who wants him to RPO a lot probably should expect to see Brady Hart starting at some point during the year. It's tough enough to keep a starting pocket QB healthy.

To make it in the NFL, you ultimiately have to be able to read defenses both before the snap and after. YOu have to be able to progress through reads and make all the throws.
The running will be there when you need it, but you can only get better at the QB part by prioritizing it.

Maybe he never gets better, but the staff is doing the right thing

Wasnt brady pretty low rated, did the scouts just miss that badly?

Get to 5-0 with a minimum amount of wear and tear has to be the plan.

People may not think it's that important, or they're probably tired of me & others bringing it up, but hopefully MR worked on placement of his feet before the snap and not tipping off every play (whether run or pass).

IIRC, he was a top 50-75 player in the 26 class but reclassified to the 25 class and enrolled early as well, so as expected his rankings took a hit but he was still ranked in the top 200 (247 composite, ranked 195) and definitely a strong 4 star. Really only took a hit for being so young as expected and quite honestly under developed at 6'4" and 180, but he is definitely talented, no doubt about it

It's not even about running him more. Wiggins needs to move the pocket, lean heavy on the RPO game, and not ask him to make the majority of his throws in a true progression environment. Klein asked him to do that too much last year, and that's where we stalled.

This will not only help Reed in his processing and playmaking, but will also take some pressure off the OL as they learn to play with each other. It's still not going to be perfect, but we'll get more out of Reed and the 5 up front if we don't force pocket passing on this offense.

As a side note, one thing Reed does pretty well is avoid taking big hits. If he gets hurt, it'll likely be a lower body injury in a pile as opposed to a shoulder, ribs, concussion, etc.

Agree with all of this. We unnecessarily constrained one of our best weapons. I bet we end up top 3 in total yards in the SEC by the end of the year.

If so (and I'm not doubting the possibility with Reed and this offense's weaponry), and with the way this Elko / Hemphill Defense is going to perform, this Aggie roster would easily be a CFP team in 2026.
