Just so we can put this to bed once and for all, Tech informed Sorsby that he would not play for Tech this year.
According to court filings by Sorsby's legal team to dismiss the case against the NCAA:

"On June 15, 2026, Plaintiff was informed by Texas Tech that, notwithstanding the Temporary Injunction Order, the University would not permit Plaintiff to play for its football team during the 2026-27 football season, thereby rendering the relief afforded by the Temporary Injunction Order moot..."

Sorsby and the NCAA mutually agreed that the case would be dismissed "with prejudice", so it can not be reopened or re-filed.

edit: just so I'm clear on this, I don't care how or why it happened. I'm just glad that it did.

If that's the case, not sure how that would end up in an additional $2mm payment to go away. Unless NIL deals now have guaranteed playing time in them, which I doubt. Also can't believe that a $7mm payment to a player who isn't even on the team goes over well with the rest of the team either. But hey, who knows?

If he bet on games he played in, he should be banned for life.

Now his agent is going on talk radio in Dallas saying that Cincinnati knew and didn't do anything.

Cincinnati is public and subject to open records requests in Ohio. What they knew is already out there.

This kid and his team are doing literally everything possible to kill his chance to hold a clipboard in the NFL.

There are two options: Cinci didn't know, or Cinci did know and didn't tell. Both are bad.

I am of the opinion that they knew, and were behind the report to the NCAA. They sued Sorsby for breach of contract and were not at all happy he went to Tech. That's conjecture on my part, but like I said, whether they knew or not, it's a bad look for Cinci.

Got a question. Tech says they never knew as well but Cody also states they did a very thorough background check. These two areas do not align.

What's the truth.

Why is it bad if Cincy didn't know? They don't check players' phones and if he kept it to himself then they'd have know way of knowing unless he openly talked about it in front of them.

As far as I know, all players are required to install the ProhiBet software in their devices, so the schools can monitor what's going on. However, Sorsby admitted that he used numerous proxy accounts not on his phone or in his name to place bets, and that is the part that the school can't monitor.

If that is all actually the case, it's quite reasonable that Cincy wouldn't have known.

Gotcha. Wasn't aware of the software, but yes, many ways to get around it.

Yes, I am a Tech grad. And to be clear, I am only speculating on the answer to your question... I am not attached to the athletic department in any way.

My understanding is that the gambling management software that gets installed on a player's devices is managed by the school, so in this case Cincinnati. I don't think Tech (nor anyone else) would have access to that.

To that point, LSU also heavily pursued Sorsby, and I presume would have done the same background checks, and also turned up nothing.

Cinci says that last fall, their software flagged Sorsby as having activity on at least one of the gambling sites and they say they asked him about it, and he said he didn't place any bets so they let it drop and apparently didn't investigate further... and didn't report it.

Something that troubles me is that I would assume that Tech would have asked Sorsby if he had done any number of things (including gambling) that would disqualify him, and I would also assume he answered in the negative. Tech also has a student Code of Conduct that students have to agree to and sign that would prohibit this, and I would assume that Tech's NIL contract would have a morals clause of some kind that would have disqualified him. If that's not part of the contract, Tech's lawyers should be fired today.

A complaint I have with the Tech administration is that if this had been a backup deep snapper, they would have dismissed him out of hand. But because he was getting paid a lot and was considered the #1 player in the portal with a lot of visibility, I think they handled it differently (and poorly).

As a professional, I know that companies will do extensive background checks. One was done on me when I was hired, and we do them on prospects before we hire new people as a matter of course. I don't think it would be difficult to hide that, especially if Sorsby was betting by proxy with friends and family members, which he said he was.

Anyway. Who knows. I would bet Sorsby's payout that Tech will change its procedures as a result of all this.

My understanding is a thorough background check would have easily found this out per what has been reported by others. That's not really was my question.

Since their "thorough background check" seems to have failed, will Tech now re-check on other guys they signed out of the portal? Would they take action if they find anything? Will Tech's rivals (and loyalists in the press) smell blood in the water and start doing some checking of their own on all Tech signees? Tech is not going to be able put a lid on this can of worms any time soon. In retrospect, Tech's vigorous defense of Sorsby and exposure of their failed vetting process may end up causing them a lot more problems than the original issue. As result of that ill advised video they put out, the hit that Tech has taken to its institutional integrity is going to follow them around for quite some time. I can't see Paxton's butting in as helping anyone. Not Paxton, Not Campbell. Not Tech. Just another stupid decision in this dumpster fire full of stupid decisions.

Tech's relationship with the Big 12 may be permanently damaged, with each side now locked into a bad marriage. And Tech really has few options to make things better. If they try to leave the Big 12, no other conference is likely to take them, (or even schedule them) under the present circumstances. If I was Tech's PR guy, I would have no idea where to even start trying to deal with this mess.
