Politicians coming together to give tax cuts to football players is next level scheming.

Before you all start clamoring for the same, remember that Texas can't do this because we don't have a state income tax.

So they would only have an advantage over states that have an income tax.

Same poverty ass state that paid Brett Farve and Ted DiBiase, Jr. millions of federal welfare funds in various scams.

We should convince the city of Austin to pass an 75% income tax on income over $100,000.

Mississippi is poorest state in union that has to take welfare money to build a collegiate volleyball arena at the behest of Brett Favre and now they are eliminating some of their richest residents from the tax base. Genius!

If I'm a Mississippi citizen I'm raising all kinds of hell about this.
These kids are making more money to play football than many folks make in their entire careers. And you want to give THEM a tax break.
Our priorities are SO ****ed up in this country. Yet one more thing that is just twisting the knife in college football.

There's merit to this, though. Heard it mentioned that one player is going to make $5M in NIL. For which, $200K would be owed to the state for taxes. That's a drop in the bucket, comparatively.

But that same $200K could be stretched to pay for a lot of school lunches in the K-12 program.

I'm no bleeding heart lib or commie, but I can see when politicians aren't putting the majority of their constituents first.

And as someone else pointed out in this thread, the advantage this gives is only against what... Alabama and Georgia? SEC schools in TX, FL and TN already don't have state income tax.

Oh but wait, there's the hope for a recruiting advantage over Kiffin and LSU...

There is a Texas constitutional amendment against any income tax, state, local or city. So nice try, but think of something else outside the box.

Not even close. By GDP, they're 37th -- around the bottom of the middle third. By tax revenue, they're even a little better, ahead of states like Hawaii and Nebraska.

Now, they may spend all that, creating a shortfall, but revenue generation wise, they aren't Texas but they also aren't at the bottom of anything.

By GDP? They're the lowest. Look at GDP per capita - they're 50th out of 50. They're only 37th if you don't adjust for population.

Trust me, I'm a nerd.

Mississippi is phasing out their income tax anyway. That law passed in 2025.
This has very little impact on the states tax income and gives them a 4%-5% advantage over their neighbors in NIL.

What's dumb is the time and energy spent by MS lawmakers on this. Shouldn't they be coming up with new ways to job their education numbers? Zzzziiiiiiinnngggg

Have you looked at education rankings lately?

They are doing better than most libtard states now.

Your average Mississippi citizen is probably going to vote for the politician who is trying to make your CFB teams better FYI. Additionally, how much money is that state actually forgoing here? Not that I agree with it.

I'm sure Baylor could help them write a financial impact report about how this tax break would allow them to be more competitve, therefore more merch and ticket sales and thus a financial benefit to the state.

Yes - it was a joke implying those numbers are "jobbed"
** its a joke - i don't know if those numbers are jobbed or if the implication that large numbers of kids being held back is cheating for stats or if its just doing the right thing for the students. I honestly don't care and I deeply regret potentially derailing this thread.

The point that MS lawmakers (most lawmakers) spend too much time on the wrong things - stands.

I understand that Mississippi is trying to gain recruiting advantages, but I think removing tax on NIL money is a bad idea because it's income and therefore should be taxed.

So as of right now if I donated to NIL I'd be taxed right? Or are we just talking about NIL earning being taxed for the players?

It's stupid because if it passes in Miss, eventually it would pass everywhere and no longer be an advantage and then it becomes a disadvantage for everyone

I guess they weren't thinking ahead in Starkville

State is playing a road game at Minnesota this year

and Minnesota is a top 5 state for the jock tax -- almost 10%

whoops

I bet the Bulldogs are not flying in Thursday or staying over to Sunday

whats the tax bill for a bulldog making $1 million in NIL (which most aren't) for this game?

less than $800 probably?

(this assumes the NIL money is even earned in Minnesota, which is not clear that it does).

Incentivize millionaires to come to work in your state by reducing their taxes. It's so simple it's brilliant. Wonder why others haven't thought of this before?
