Klein I'm sure is 10000% locked in on calling plays for players and a team he will not see nor be a part of next year, just like he did during the sip game. Am I right or am I right? Locked in

Coach Wiggins has been rumored since day 1, why the delay in the announcement?

Probably contract stuff or maybe Elko wanted to make sure he can secure the QB coach/ co-oc first.

Really it could be many reasons

That's a mistake and a big leap of faith

Lazy take. Big leap of faith, maybe. Mistake? You're making assumptions based on little to no information.

So, you don't think the fact he has never served as an OC is a legitimate basis for the assumptions ? Then why don't you add to that our Aggie history of making poor hiring/selection decisions on coaches.

No, I don't.

What's hysterical to me is that IF the Wiggins hire works out and the offense is great next season, and should other programs come sniffing around to offer him a job elsewhere, you'll be screaming from the rafters that we need to open up the checkbook to keep him, completely forgetting and ignoring the fact that you called his hiring a mistake in the first place.

We don't know if it'll work out or not. I agreed that it's a leap of faith. But calling it a mistake? We don't know that yet, YOU don't know that yet. Remember when we hired an experienced, veteran OC a few years back named Noel Mazzone? How did that work out?

As I posted earlier, the winningest, most successful HC in Texas A&M history had no experience as a HC when he was hired. None….zero. The presumption that just because someone hasn't done a job before makes them unqualified or unable to do it is extremely asinine.

It's not like Wiggins doesn't have an impressive resume'. These posts reek of entitlement, as if we are somehow deserving of "big name" hires at every open position…based on what exactly? The fact that we haven't won a NC in 86 years or a conference championship in 27?

Maybe we ought to trust the guy who we hired to be the HC, who is 19-6 in his first two seasons and who has us 11-1 and in the playoffs for the first time in school history, to make the right hire. It's not like his job doesn't depend on having quality assistants.
Awful post.

If Wiggins works out, of course we'll want him back. Posters being wrong doesn't matter. Elko being wrong does.

Taking a leap of faith (as you concede) on a guy who has never been an OC is by definition a mistake. You don't take a leap of faith on decisions of this magnitude. The fact that you can point to a first time coach who ended up being successful as some sort of proof that hiring a first time coach isn't horribly risky is just idiotic. Exceptions don't make rules, and no responsible manager governs like that.

While we may not be entitled to anything, we're a school with more money than most who doesn't have to resort to hiring a guy with zero experience. We might luck out with Wiggins and if we do that's exactly what it will be. The way safer approach would be to hire someone with an impressive history at OC. Elko whiffed on Bateman and I'm not sure how good Klein was. So let's not act like Elko is beyond reproach.

I think questioning this hire is totally fair.

Not as risky if Elko brings in another asst or consultant experienced with play calling to help Wiggins get his feet wet... Let's see this play our first.

Yall act like people are born with experience calling offensive plays.

Wiggins has extensive experience under great coaches (and was rumored to be a potential next man up for Saban).

I don't think Elko, Trev, or those floating loads of money to the program are going to make this promotion knowing it won't work out.

Take the BAS, shove it in the closet and enjoy the days leading up to our first CFP appearance

Risky with no OC experience. Hope for the best

Looks like he coached under Saban for three years(2019-2023) and was promoted by Saban to assistant head coach of offense in addition to wide receivers coach in his last year at Alabama, then Elko hired him. With the success coaches from the Saban tree have had I think this looks like a very good hire. He may not pan out but I don't see how anyone can think he is not qualified.
That and he's been co-OC here already as it is. Elko didn't just give him that as a fake title.

This is the best our WR's have ever looked outside of the Mike Evans era.

Elko wasn't a head coach until Duke came calling and now look what he has done in 4 years as the head man. Wiggins has been in the coaching ranks for some 20 years and he has coached both under Saban and now Elko. I trust that Elko knows what he's looking for so I'm not that worried about his decision.

Elko is clearly wanting to create a culture where good coaches want to come work for him to take the next steps.

I hope Wiggins "has it", sure seems qualified to give it a shot.

In the end, this is as important a call for a head coach as any, so gotta trust Elko here until George's he can't identify coaching talent

I like him but am a little worried about the promotion. Being OC at Texas A&M is a big big job. Should it go to a guy who have never been an OC? Not even at a group of 5 school?

I sure hope he excels. But yes I'm worried. He's proven himself to be one of the nation's best receivers position coaches. But as a coordination he has not proven anything. Shoukd a big job like the Texas A&M OC job go to a person who has never proven himself in tge role of an OC?

Elko said he interviewed 5 other across the country for the OC job. And he landed right back on Wiggins.

Between this and the bonus structure Elko got for his assistants, Elko know exactly what he's doing.

He could be the best OC ever or the worst OC ever. We'll find out after next season.

We've hired a lot of coaches with all the right credentials that end up failing miserably.

As long as Wiggins doesn't call for a 50 yard pass play on 3rd and 2, we should be ok.

We will be hiring a play caller…Wiggins is OC, but will not be the play caller. Book it.

assistant head coach of offense - he didn't even make associate. his assistant role was taking on day to day tasks and helping with practices.

Having an off season ain't gonna help at this point. If he's not ready, he's not ready. Tell Klein to step aside and give him the wheel. I'm predicting an epic fail. His name has never come up for OC at G5 or FCS school.

If Wiggens is the future, let's get him started now and he'll have at least one game experience under his belt.

A&M not very attractive in your mind to offensive coordinators, huh? How did we ever get Mike Elko as DC during Jimbo's days? Lmao
