Their DL were playing with the ideal technique when you are so physically outmatched. Stay low, make a pile and when the OL in front of you pulls, get in his hip pocket and meet the RB in the backfield.

ALMOST every unproductive trap or GT pull we ran, the Center failed to seal the backside.

It's amazing how many people here are unhappy being 2-0. I feel like many of you would be happier if we had lost both games.

Sounds like you just lack reading comprehension skills. Nobody is unhappy about the fact of being 2-0. People are unhappy about the lackluster performances in both games because they are indicative of issues that will cause us to lose games against better competition.

This is exactly the team I expected. Nothing great. A athletic qb who is slightly above average. A defense with no real playmakers who shows potential but doesn't have a relentless, dominating personality. A team with just enough potential to keep everyone excited until we get our 3rd and 4th loss and we start talking about the portal and young players with potential. I have said it on here for years and will continue to say it. You have to have a qb with qb instincts and natural qb talent. You can't necessarily stick an athlete back there with a strong arm and think you have a qb. Fisher's downfall was not recruiting and developing an elite qb and if Elko can't, it will be his downfall. Reed is not the answer. We definitely have other issues but we aren't anywhere near national championship contenders and it starts with the qb.

I said what I said.

This dude has never been in a fight, did everything possible to coward out of war, hasn't been able to see his junk over his fat in 20 years, and still talks like playing football in high school is a sign of manliness 30 years later. High probability this loser still still owns his letterman jacket

We're not supposed to keep our HS Letter Jackets? lol Good thing mine rotted 20 yrs ago.
I still have my college letter sweater, from 40 yrs ago, though..

I'll add my observations (based on yours)

You can't cross anything off the list until you lose games. So that's dumb. We're not running over teams which is a little concerning but we aren't giving up sacks or a lot of pressures which is good. It's encouraging we are getting a lot of players reps which is good.

Marcel has not thrown a lot of bad balls (under or overthrown). He's thrown some amazing passes but he's completely missed some. There was a play where he didn't see Concepcion running free because he juked a DB off his feet for what would have been an easy TD. He scrambled and got a small gain. It's impossible to say if O'Neill is a better passer because he hasn't really played enough to tell. I completely disagree with you here he looks better passing this year and is still a dangerous runner.

Not sure about our pass D. Utah St threw for like 170 but most of that came on 3-4 passes. I know it's Utah St. and I may be kidding myself but we need to see how they do against ND. Our run D is the same we look great then we allow an explosive play. It was cleaned up some Saturday but we have struggled on 3rd and long. We finally pressured the QB which is encouraging.

"A good mobile quarterback is going to kill us."

How can you tell? It's not like we have played a mobile QB and failed. We will see against ND since they have a mobile QB.

"A good offense with tempo is going to kill us."

Again we haven't played an offense with tempo so not sure what you are basing this on. It's not like the Jimbo days when we couldn't get set.

"Any well-executed misdirection is going to kill us."

Again, it's possible but neither team we have played has had success with this so….

"Our receivers are badass despite the drops."

What drops? You claim our receivers are underutilized but Mario Craver is the second leading receiver in the SEC and we are the only SEC team with two WR's with 3 TD's.

"Our kicking game is not very good."

We have only kicked two and missed one FG where we put Bond in who is now our backup for a long FG late in the game. Our starter missed 1 out of 12 PAT's. This could be a problem or nothing. We will see.

"A win over Notre Dame would shock me. There is no reason to believe we will win that game."

It would not surprise me if we won (or lost). We're not favored. I suspect it will be close whether we win or lose.

We are going to win more than 7 games, but the margin for error is tiny. South Carolina, Arkansas, MSST, Auburn all look pretty good and those were the games where we should have been favored.

Maybe we fall on our face next week but I'll believe it when I see it.

I rewatched the Vanderbilt / VTech game. Why? I wanted to see if and how coaches coach and teams play … especially after halftime adjustments. Vanderbilt did something magical after the first half. The team came of the locker room intense, looking prepared, and focused. And it showed on the field. They completely took over the game and dominated on both sides of the ball (particularly on defense) the entire second half. The quality of play and results were quite literally night and day.

When I finished watching the game, I realized how jealous I was … yes, of Vanderbilt … because it gad a coaching staff that actually sees what's going on in the game and actually makes substantive, beneficial adjustments to give their team the best chance to not only win but also to impress. It all starts at the top, everyone. And, imo, we ain't got it at the top. And that's why we're seeing what we see on the field just out of the locker room and during the game.

Not sure if you have watched A&M play but our MO is making significant adjustments in the second half which is great unless you argue we weren't ready in the first.

Elko seems competent at making halftime adjustments. Unfortunately, that's often not enough to make up for being unprepared at the beginning of games, and we have been unprepared at the beginning of most games during his tenure. Imagine the Auburn game last year if we hadn't spotted them 21 ****ing points. That has to stop. I don't care how explosive we think our offense is. Your plan can't be to get your head bashed in for a half, make adjustments, and then try to make an incredible comeback in the second half. Not against teams with the level of talent we are playing.

from what I was seeing it was very inconsistent

one play the Aggie O Line would get punctured by untalented DL

the next play they would hit a big pass

one play the DL will get a sack

the next play the average RB will take off for a big gain.

inconsistency might spell doom in South Bend

it could just as likely be that the VTECH coach sucks

which is actually proven as VTECH has lost more one score games than any other team in the USA the last 4 years. including FCS.

This.

I hated it when the wrecking crew did it too.

Save it for big plays.

Inconsistency on both sides of the ball is what concerns me the most

Donot think Reed has good awareness of how to sustain a drive meticulously…often times he plays too impulsively with a playful mentality - not a sign of a great/mature quarterback

I think we are an average to above average SEC team at the moment, which isn't meant to be a slight based on the existing parity within the league. What we seem to lack is consistency and focus, especially coming out of halftime.

To have a shot Saturday we have to be consistent, focused, and essentially mistake free. If we show up with the same energy and lack of discipline (e.g., run fits) we will lose. We cannot give Notre Dame more drives via turnovers. We do that, we lose.

I am really high on Craver and KC. Reed is playing good enough, but he'll need to play electric this weekend.

He's physically a very talented guy. He doesn't seem to have the firey, competitor gene that a guy like Manziel did. This team needs alphas

Saying exactly what I wanted to say, guys who don't understand strategy and how ball should actually be played. If we wanted lane kniffin coaching we would have hired him.

That's what's funny, some of us are asking for the same thing, but the difference is i understand we have to make mistakes, play 2nd and 3rd string that allows us to go 44-22 or 42-24. Most of the people on here want us to go 73-0 on these teams, but if we did I know we gave up too much of our game plan, and didn't give those other guys reps for when we will need them due to injuries. Zero foresight in this sub alot of time sadly.

You think we're intentionally having Reed miss open receivers, having our receivers drop catchable passes, having our first string secondary give up touchdown passes, and having our first string front 7 and safeties bite on misdirection and get gashed in the run game?

It's difficult to deduce anything positive from two games/opponents like we've played. I do think UTSA is a lot better than most gave them credit for. We played a really solid half of football against Utah State before losing focus. Here's what I think I know...

  • We are without a doubt better on offense than we were last year. We have put an emphasis on the RPO and passing game in these first two games. The run game should be there, and we saw us get into it a bit more against Utah State
  • This was a good offensive line unit last year with everyone back. They will be a good unit this year.
  • We have upgraded at WR. Without a doubt more dynamic and have more speed.
  • Reed has grown as a passer. He's not perfect, and there have certainly been some rough throws, but several looked to me more like miscommunications than just bad balls.
  • The defense can be good, but boy are they inconsistent. Absolutely have to clean some things up and be more disciplined in the run game to have any chance of success. The bad plays on defense always stand out way more to us than the good. They have been as dominant as they should be in some stretches of these games.
  • Will Lee played his worst game in an Aggie uniform against Utah State... not sure where his head was but he was awful.
  • Onyedim and Regis have been pretty decent at DT in flashes. Need a few more bodies to step up.
  • Dalton Brooks still a bad tackler.
  • Bryce Anderson still just an OK safety... I'd like to see him back at nickel personally. Felt like he was better there.
Elko said ND will play a ton of man coverage. They will likely load the box and force Reed to make decisions. We are massively more prepared to beat man coverage this year than last year. The RPO game is going to make or break this one for our offense, and I think we've known this since before UTSA. If we can get Craver and KC loose early and make them respect it then we'll be set up for success. Reed is going to have to hit a few 3rd and 8 type throws. It's going to be a very frustrating game. If we win, it'll be by 3-7 points.

Or we could really struggle to move the ball, not be able to stop the run, and lose by 21. Depends which team shows up and for how long. In our current state, we are too inconsistent to be a playoff team. Good news is what we are today doesn't have to be what we are all year, or even on Saturday.

Jawn Dough said:

On both sides, we are too conservative.

Elko coaches not too lose. He coaches scared.

He didn't coach at all...

We ran a 4-2-5 every play for both games. We did not blitz, stunt or do anything a single time.

We maybe pulled a guard or tackle once or twice. We have run 5% of the O & D plays that we have.

We will find out, end of story.
