He knows once he starts firing coordinators, especially defensive, which he is supposed to be a "specialist" in, it is already signaling the beginning of the end of his tenure, just delaying the inevitable.
He needs to address the issues and if that means canning a coordinator (or other defensive assistants) that cost you numerous embarrassing losses, then you do it because that's your job- to win. Time is of the essence in this game. You hesitate, you lose .

Nope. Simply an observation that the same people say the same thing every time we go through this and just can't seem to understand that sometimes criticism of coaches is warranted and that, in fact, the coach is not always right.
And a keyboard coach that only uses hindsight isnt always right either.

I don't have to have a plan. I don't get paid a penny by the school to execute one.
I just think the same worn out, repeated statement of blind faith is naive and comes off as such, especially given our history.
Unless Elko plans to just low-key take over the whole defense, I don't see how we can be meaningfully better next year. We'll get a couple of guys back healthy and add more in the portal, but we still couldn't stop the run in the latter half of the season with all of our NFL-bound DL and Scooby Williams playing, and apparently multiple of next year's starting DBs literally don't know how to play zone coverage according to Elko himself, so…..we're just going to roll with that? Seems questionable, to put it mildly.
This is one of those times where if I was still donating real money to the program, I would want some serious answers with real specifics from Elko. Would you keep sinking money into a failing investment if you had zero information about how things will be fixed and your money used prudently going forward? I wouldn't. And this isn't even an investment. You get nothing for giving your money away to this endeavor.

Elko's not going to effectively admit he effed up the defensive coordinator hire.
Fire the people hiring them. Other schools have managed to have success in their first year.

it is not an unfair criticism to say that the ags defense stunk up the joint the last half of the season. especially when before the season started there was talk of best elko defense he has ever coached. this defense was very very undisciplined and that falls squarely on the d coordinator and the hc who hired him. we had too much talent to be that bad on defense. that's coaching.
at the bare minimum bateman should no longer call the defense,elko should, even if u want to keep him on staff as a linebacker coach or whatever.

I agree, if Elko is the genius play caller which I think he's pretty damn good at it, why in the hell isn't he taking on that most important role? Do what you do best coach!
It's unrealistic to get full transparency from a head football coach. But it would be interesting to hear an explanation of the issues. Defense was clearly less successful from South Carolina forward.

He said he wasn't happy since Missouri and our secondary didn't know how to run zone coverage. Was not a happy camper during the post hame press conference.

Like I said before getting better doesn't have to mean firing coaches. You can actually recruit better, change some position coach assignments. Put a system in and require coaches to learn a new concept. Coaches frequently review systems, practice and teaching methods, drills, install new schemes borrowing from others film...
It takes detailed dedicated coaches, smart coaches, right personnel and recruiting and culture.
Ellis is a seriously knowledgeable and capable in depth ball coach , leader and authority.
Sherman had a lot of it but not all those features.
Jimbo had many.
Fran had none and I told yall about him as soon as he announced his staff.

And you had the same cheerleaders saying the same things (give them time, they need to get their own guys, injury problems, cupboard was bare, etc.) for 3 or so years, then the support isn't as totally blind once it is beyond obvious it ain't gonna work, a year or so later the coach gets fired and then it starts right back up with the hiring of the new coach.4 said:vander54 said:

Seems like a huge jump to go from ILB coach at Florida to DC at A&M calling plays and it shows. Either Elko takes over the defense which includes play calling or we need a new DC who can. You don't drop Jimbo buyout money and brng in a completely new staff to have the same results but on the other side of the ball, underwhelming 1st yr.

He gave some pretty amazing transparency in the post bowl game presser. Basically didn't have the mental capacity in the team to run complex zone coverage.
The unfortunate truth in nearly all assistant coaching changes is that we probably won't know if anyone is officially fired. Much like corporate executives, there are creative ways to achieve the desired outcome without the negative implications on the assistant's career. We'll hear little/nothing until spring, when perhaps we'll hear that Bateman has accepted a HC role at a FBS or smaller school, or duties will be "expanded" to leverage his expertise in player development and scouting, etc.
Ultimately head coaches want to expand their lineage by having their assistants be successful, sooner or later. Meaning that you want to be seen as a "factory" that can produce winning coaches. How many assistants did Nick Saban "fire"? Throwing your assistants under the bus is a recipe for disaster.
