We didn't really offer any vertical downfield threat season, but it was tough to gauge how much of that was due to limitation on Reed's part and how much was on the lack of talent at receiver. My hunch is that it was a bit of both, but we're shaping up to have a much better receiving room next season, so we should find out.

It's not like we have to run the run and shoot, but if opposing defenses had to worry about Reed going over the top even a little bit, it would really open up the offense.

It's also hard to tell how much play calling plays into the lack of explosive plays as well. I started off as a Klein hater, but I'm more agnostic watching the season play out. There are some valid excuses this year (first year QB who didn't get 1st team reps until mid-way through season, mediocre receiving corps). Next year I want to see Klein spam the RPOs and try create more angles for vertical shots. There will be far fewer excuses next year.

How far into next spring is everyone calling for O'Neil?

I would like Reed to gain some weight. He did improve a lot over the last few games and should be much better next year. losing Moss hurt, but Reed's passing got much better.

Marcel is a stud

Reed is the type of QB who looks good on a bad team. He better make a lot of progress if he is going to be a QB who leads his team to the playoffs. Of course, according to some of you, Reed just needs all other positions to be elite and then he'll be good. I don't dislike Reed as a person. I just think his game is so far behind where it needs to be for us to be a national contender.

South Carolina a combo of the defense nit being able to tackle, dumb GameDay coaching by Elko and awful 4 and 1 calls by Klein. Of course could have been better but the other things I mentioned were worse.

Reed will never see the field barring injuries or in mop up time. He has the worst throwing mechanics of any college qb.

Looking through the media guide. For a single season among freshmen in A&M history, QB Marcel Reed ranked second in pass yards (1,864) and completions (147), third in pass TDs (15), T-10th in rush TDs (7), and 14th in rush yards (547). Reed appeared in 11 games with eight starts.

That's what gets me, at the end of the day winning is the most important metric to measure for a QB. The last 4 games after teams had tape on him we had 4 losses, didn't throw for over 300 yards in any of those games I believe. Team rushing wasn't what it needed to be either

Bring in an offensive coordinator/QB coach like kliff kingsbury to coach him up. Klein ain't it. We are wasting a good athlete.

This is the dumbest QB stat in earth. Wins are a team stat not set to one position or group. Expecting a QB to win games single handedly is dumb and thays what you're saying when you say winning is the most important metric.

Actualy all but 1 . And the defense played poorly in all those loses. Not to mention our running game wasn't as strong with Moss and OL injuries.

Reed is an athlete still learning to play QB. Happy feet and touch are still issues.

So to be clear - you think Johnny Manziel 2013 & Marcel Reed are essentially the same QB, given that winning is all that matters and they both went 8-4 (and Johnny did it with better OL and skill talent around him).

For his own sake, I hope he puts on at least 10-15 lbs. He seems to have a very thin frame...Not his fault, but I fear he'll be injured. Seems like a tough hombre thus far though.

The one encouraging thing on offense in the bowl was our use of TEs. I hope we keep that up as it could save him quite a bit with unproven WRs.

Our defensive collapse was the reason for our end of season losses. We couldn't stop the run or the pass. Red zone defense was non existent.

Kinda wild to me that this sort of stuff goes unnoticed. I thought there was supposed to be a huge support staff, part of which dedicated to ensuring this type of things don't happen.

Also I thought with Saban staying on at Bama, he'd insist on keeping the giga staff to catch this stuff. Is this just overall sloppiness by their program?

And do we know if we kept the huge support staff that Jimbo insisted on having? Or were they a casualty of Alberts?

All I know is Jimbo coaching and ither staff members budget was $13M. Elko's is $11M

Yeah I remember the hay made of that budget cut. But it was just cutting us down to match what Bama/Georgia pay, right?

Either way, we ought to be able to hire a giga support staff for $11M. Pretty much unacceptable our staff didn't identify and fully fix Reed's problem before the Texas game. Should never have been an issue in the first place

I think he could be really good.
