Why don't we just put a pile of money at midfield?

That's all that matters to these "players"

Skip the plays and the refs and just let them fight over the money like dogs.

I hate the current system. The portal & NIL sux, IMO.

I said before it happened that it will make college football worse and I was not a fan (unless it brings A&M a championship...yes I am a hypocrite.)

PSU just lost their back-up QB before the playoffs to the portal. This will most likely happen more often now. And don't even get me started on teams losing players that are not in the playoffs.

Did I miss something? Did we lose a player?

OP- if they didn't pay you, would you go to work?

More crabbing about a system SCOTUS and another federal court and many state legislatures deemed corrupt. I guess the notion of amateurism is like absolute power…

It isn't the player''s fault. They are doing a job and it is paying money. Just like presumably you work for money and would likely change jobs if someone offered you substantially more to do the same job somewhere else.

If you are upset at the system and not having better free agency safe guards, then complain about those who can address that. Which isn't the players.

College football is a billion dollar industry. The players deserve to be paid. We're just in this transition phase right now and every player is basically on a one year contract. It is what it is until the players become employees and have to sign multiyear contracts.

If players wait, the slots get filled. I'm not sure why he waited this long honestly.

Wouldn't it be more effective to put the money in the end zone?

If there was a Global maid of honor convention in Las Vegas, this program would find itself going to bed alone every night.

It doesn't matter how much money we have we find a way to screw it up.

I'm surprised we're not seeing teams like Boise, SMU, and Arizona State losing starters to the portal before the playoffs

Lol, well they have always been paid. Four year free ride is worth a lot of money for a few hours a week and playing a game. What did you get paid when working during college? Of course, few are wanting an education and generally don't get one.

***** all you want. Our court system has resoundingly affirmed time after time that the NCAA has been violating anti trust laws for generations. In the midst of all that, the NCAA floundered and flopped at every turn, missing every opportunity to put some sort of legitimate framework in place. Now we are left with the Wild West. Make no mistake, while players are jumping ship from place to place, our coaches are also pushing players out on the other side of the coin. Calling players "dogs" is poor form and it says something about you.

It's not a job.

Pie in the sky - these are students who are playing a game. They have always been paid, sometimes above the table through things like scholarships/room & board, etc, and other times under the table (our own job scandal in the early 90s, OU's car dealership thing, etc).

Prior to NIL, there were limitations on these kids' earning potential that were ridiculous. But now we've gone in the opposite direction where kids are getting millions (apparently). We might as well just start referring to college football as NFL Minor League.

And any attempt by you or anyone else to 'limit' their earnings based on whatever offends your sensibilities is illegal. I guess you can just be mad about it

I feel the same way. NIL is unregulated and very top heavy. Add in the open ended portal and it's turned into cash for hire, at this point whether they pan out or not. Curious how many people wasted money on Connor just to watch him **** the bed and transfer to Houston. At this point, why even enroll, just call them employees.

Everyone wants to point fingers at the players for the current state of CFB?

The coaches and administrators Arnt money hungry?

How about the fans "win at all cost mentality"?

You love it when a player abandons their current team for the Ags but admonish anyone who dares leave college station.

At least the nfl has a draft, contracts, and salary caps. There is limited to no regulation on the portal or nil.

Some of these kids will make more money now, as teenagers, than they'll make at any time in their lives.

Some will never get their degrees and most will never go pro and will leave college without any skills for getting a job

What you're saying is that it's always been a job, they were just underpaid.

To a certain extent that has some accuracy. But not toally.

I agree that players and coaches should be under the same constraint for contractual obligation. A scholarship is a one year contract, so that makes the portal legally understandable.

However... It's the dollars and the egos that drive all of this. Half a billion dollar stadia, Billion+ dollar TV contracts, 10 million dollar coaches are what change the collegiate game - the players were just late to get their share.

* "They were always paid" - to a certain extent, but it had a more "paying for your loyalty" than "paying you for the job" to the understandings.

* "A few hours a week" - BS it's many hours per week, pretty much all year.

And yes, it does suck, and much of it is because of the egos of those unsatisfied with winning your conference, beating your rival, and playing in your bowl game to be the goals of collegiate football.

The money and egos wanted a Jr NFL and got precisely that. My magic wand would have it all as DIII football with student athletes playing for getting laid Saturday night, $20 tickets, $4 hot dogs, and coaches making whatever other PE teachers at the school make and only playing schools that you have a natural reason to play, geography or situation.

It's not work it's a game. They are not employees they are students, and they are paid in the form of tuition, books, tutors, food, training, housing, training, medical, etc.

If it's considered a job is really irrelevant and not central to the argument. It's a Supply and Demand principle and is irrelevant what we call the subjects.

Before NIL, for every player who made millions under the table and went to make millions in the NFL there were 100 players living off their scholarships where the road ended in a menial job with a destroyed body.

I doubt many or if any of you would take that bet. Now that the tables are tilting a little to their side, you guys want to take away their only leverage?

I would say most of you against NIL would be up in arms if anyone would come and restrict your income. If the Michigan kid that got 4M/yr finishes college and doesn't want to put his body through NFL hell, then good for him. He can quit football and live his life relatively healthy. They have no obligations to play for our enjoyment.

If I got a academic scholarship, what right does the university have to tell me not to take a google 1M/yr job or do a 1099 side gig? If they want to take away my scholarship, then go right ahead it is their right. But I am sure if I am "football" valuable, many schools would be lining up to give me an academic scholarship.
