No way 12 teams deserve a shot to be national championship.

Garbage Big 12 teams with 2 losses
Non conference champions without a ranked win
Whiny SEC teams with 3 losses... grow up you lost 3 games

No it's not.

I was oblivious to FCS football until I found myself at Appalachian State the very three years they won three consecutive national championships. That third win began with the Mountaineers beating Michigan at The Big House.

The FCS playoff at the time was 16 teams and a lot of fun. I mean I never could have imagined going from solely watching the premier college football teams to the likes of Northern Iowa, Furman, Southern Illinois, Texas State, Nicholls (where is that even?) - but I did and it was fun.

Once this thing kicks off fans are going to wonder why we didn't do it sooner.

It's a great playoff. We need 16 or 20 in fact. More teams that can make it will lead to gradually more parity as they draw in public interest and major advertisers.

Who cares? You have to win 4 games in a row for questionable teams. Stop whining.

Are you really stating teams with two losses means they are not deserving? A conference champ, no less.

This has been the best regular season in a long time.

Just don't like blue bloods still getting favoritism. Ohio State should not get a home game. But that's the whole purpose of the CFP committee.

Just skip watching round 1 or 2 until it gets down to your preferred number.

It's DEI NCAA college playoff football at its worst. Way too much overkill. 8 would be the max.

12 is too many. 5 should have been the number with a 4/5 play-in game at #4 home field.

Are you willing to make the ccg a true elimination game , The problem is the CCG game it should matter for both teams.

16 teams
No byes No CCG
Notre Dame joins a conference
SEC goes to 9 games
I would do away with all paycheck games everything is either Home & Home or neutral site When 25% if your sample size ( 3 paycheck games out of 12 games total ) you get crap for data. Yes upsets happen but not very often and are ignored or emphasized based on what the committee predispositions

12 seems like too many. Obviously they wanted to provide greater representation across conferences, but I think 8 would have been the sweet spot.

But that the beauty of a playoff. The best team will win it, no matter what happened in a game 4 months ago. It's odd that you'd complain about more games/competition.

It really sucked being in the conversation this year all the way through thanksgiving.

A 12 team playoff in year 1 gave about 24 teams something to play for going into the final two weeks.

Give me a 16 team playoff.

16 or 24 is better. Regular season is way better if more teams are in the mix for a playoff spot. Until they balance out scheduling, it's hard to compare teams even like tu and Bama. Tu with no wins vs ranked teams and Bama with 3. Could tu even beat Bama this year? Georgia didn't.

SEC really needs the 9 game schedule with the 3/6 rotation and start it asap.

They'd be favored over any team in the country, so yes they could beat Alabama.

They could also lose to 4-5 teams out there

It's year 1. Way too early to say if it's a success or failure.

I'd prefer if it was smaller, I've always liked the no safety net feel of college football. However, this regular season has been insanely entertaining. I don't want more expansion, but I can get used to 12.

However, the current autobid structure is atrocious. The fact that Boise State will get a bye as the 10th ranked team and Notre Dame won't just because they won a conference is ridiculous. Just let the 4 highest ranked teams get a bye
BMX Bandit

That change will happen soon. Likely 14 teams with 2 byes next

I totally agree. I was saving my post for tomorrow after the final games to show how silly this crap has become.

I know how fun playoffs can be, as I grew-up in the 70's going to Texas A&I's playoff games and national championships. It was nothing like this BS. And I am a Javelina!

Follow-up in the parity claim from WSJ:

"Some of the parity in the SEC this year is because the transfer portal has made rosters shallower. In the early days of Nick Saban's dynasty at Alabama, talent acquisition was closer to a zero-sum game. The Crimson Tide were dominant because all the best high school players committed to Alabamaand they stayed there. Every five-star player on Saban's bench was one less in an opponent's starting lineup."

Yes it's paywalled.

Playoffs has been the best thing to happen to CFP. They are paid like pros anyhow, so they might as well play a few more games.

It creates excitement for many college teams. If we were in the old 2 team champ game and even the 4 team playoff, our season would be over after the ND game.

All of the championship games would have zero meaning but they all mean something now with some being defacto knock out games. The texas game would have had zero meaning for us if won but a week ago we still had a chance to go to the CFP.

Ask yourself, is the CFP designed to maximize revenue, or designed to minimize participation? The answer is maximize revenue, and maximize participation. This will grow from 12 teams to a higher number of teams as revenue prospects increase.

As a by-product, antiquated bowl games will fade away. Player participation due to draft eligibility, the portal, and NIL transfers after the regular season has already affected bowl game participation and fan interest. Expanded playoffs will eventually, and effectively, replace the bowl game structure.

Embrace it.

Conferences are too big is part of the problem.
Can't even play everyone in the conference.
Would prefer the conferences be two divisions you play the same group every year, instead of this weird rotating schedule. I guess rotating the matchups is good for TV ratings, but in terms of season tournament it makes determine the better teams hard when the schedules are so different for each team.

You're stating an opinion as fact with zero substantiating analysis. Either state it as opinion or offer perspectives on why.

Cute, but it was created to make more money for the major conferences.

The basketball tournament has 65 participants I think. Is that too many?

I think the people who don't like the bigger playoff should just not watch it. Wait until the semifinal games. It'll be just like before.

If the number of teams goes up to say 30 teams, we'll finally be able to get into the playoffs.

Notre Dame doesn't get a first round bye because they don't play in a CC game. 2 off weeks because of a 1st round bye would be too huge of an advantage. The solution is 16 teams with no byes. The proverbial carrot then becomes home field advantage for the top 8 seeds. Then maybe the 2nd round needs an additional reward for being a higher seed like choice of venue. That keeps people playing for the top spots.

cant do no byes cause if you dont play in your Confefence championship. - then that acts like a bye for all teams not playing there.

Think about - tu and Georgia play today -- both are in playoff - so is Bama and Tenn - lets say those get matched up first playoff game - no BYE -- both tu and Georgia are at a severe disadvantage..

so reward the conference champions for sure.

Do you have this same opinion about the number of NFL or MLB playoff teams?
Medaggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think they will and need to reseed.

Oregon being #1 should have the easiest path. There is no way the #5 team should have an easier path than #1, this is just asinine.

If I were texas or Oregon, losing the game and playing as double digit favs against Arizona state at home then neutral with Boise would be much better than playing the 8/9 winner at a neutral site being a 3pt favorite.

Those who hate 12 teams would not be saying this if we snuck in at #10.
