Who's saying we have a stout D. Certainly not Elko. I believe he said the run defense is horrible.
Now of course it can get better and it's going to have to pretty quick after watching that Hogs game.
And to be fair, it is "horrible" in that it keeps having blown assignments result in big gains. It is not like teams are getting 5-6 yards every play. It's that we keep giving up 20+ yard plays here and there.
On the Loochador podcast, they highlighted this with the first half rushing stats for McNeese. They had something like 52 yards on 12 carries but one of those was for something like 26 yards. So one bad play and 11 plays for 26 yards. So, that one bad play turned a 2.36 ypc into a 4.33 ypc which is the difference between good/great and meh.
Also, the second half of the McNeese game was all 2nd and 3rd stringers with lots of true freshmen. Those guys hopefully won't have to see the field much in games that matter.
