That was a complete domination last night.
Did anyone hear Ken Purcell, the retired coach in the cowboy hat who's on these telecasts every year, say Aledo's record run is due to "build it and they will come", and that they "don't recruit".
Again, I don't live up there and I'm not around this stuff daily, but I thought those comments would raise a few eyeballs. Why mention that in the first place?
Lets be real here. Every school that's in the state Semi-Finals and Finals every year for the past 20-30 years is recruiting at some level.
"Recruiting" typically means identifying which 12-14 year old boys are trending like they are going to be huge, and getting them to move to your high school attendance zone.
Its been going on forever.
Every school does it in some sort of fashion. Kid might live in a suburb with 3 high schools. One of them is great at football, and the other two are mediocre.
The above averagely talented kid will probably choose to go to the better football school because he knows he will get superior coaching, and have a better chance at a scholarship. In some places its quite easy to move to an apartment complex in that suburb or city.
How does Marcus Smart of the Boston Celtics end up winning two state championships for Flower Mound Marcus? Things that make you go hmmmm......
Truth be told it doesn't really bother me all that much. The only schools I don't respect are the gigantic ones like Allen and Plano ISD that stay absurdly big for the sole purpose of being good at sports.
Having 5,000 to 7,000 kids to pull from is an absurd advantage over normal sized high schools.
