This was always going to be a train wreck of a transition. Our administration is so incompetent they fired Jimbo and agreed to a massive buyout without first having a superior replacement in the wings and a plan to keep our hired mercenaries from defecting. Its almost like the plan was to maximize our humiliation as Texas enters our conference at their peak and our trough.
Thinking we would retain them all is maybe why some have unrealistic expectations. Dan Lanning lost 45 his first two years. Brian Kelly lost 28 his first offseason. We have 12-13 scholarships guys in right now. I expected 18-20 or so. Every team in a coaching change lose 20, some even 30+.
You do realize we have about the average number of guys in the transfer portal, right? And we are going through a coaching change. Many teams not even in a coaching change have more

It's an age old Aggie problem… Aggies listen to those who tell them what they want to hear!
I'm not saying this is the case. Based off some that have entered the portal it wouldn't make sense BUT is any of the exodus being asked to find a new home? We crapped our collective pants last time we had a mass exodus and we survived.

There's also no guarantee that all of them will actually leave. Some guys enter the portal just so they can legally hear from other schools and weigh their options. Several hit the portal from A&M last year and stayed.beerad12man said:

This is a massive nationwide musical chairs game. When the music stops a lot of kids are going to be scrambling to play at any school that will take them. Good luck finding a school with a fanbase and facilities like A&M.

One of the transfers happened because the kid showed up to the 1st team meeting with Elko 25 minutes late. Elko told him to hit the road.
I believe Ohio St has even more in the portal than we do. It'd happening to everyone. It's not just happening to us.
One change I'd like to see is that this madness wouldn't happen until after the bowl season is over with. Hopefully some of these players would play in the bowl games.

More than 1500 players have entered the portal since it opened on Monday. This is not an obstacle exclusive to Texas A&M football.

Guys leave that frees up cash to go after other talent. It's a new world and we're still one of the biggest spenders, if not the biggest, around. There's only so many spots at so many schools like A&M.
I do wonder how many of these guys are making a bad business decision. The hot thing is to enter the portal and be recruited again.
A player enters the portal, it should be ok we are working on finding your replacement time.
Forget about recruiting rankings what matters now is performance and what those players cost. Jimbo was stuck in the old era while the new one just diminished the attraction of high school kids. After a couple seasons the recruiting stars mean nothing. What have you done? Now you want more money based on what you were 2 years ago as a prospect?
If anyone leaves, Coach Elko will get an equal replacement player from the Portal. That's the new College Football game.
Elko assembled a team to work the portal at Duke and he seems to have brought that over. This is the one wild card in the transition to Elko and what could expedite a quick ramp, coupled with much better coaching and player development.
We have the ability to spend for a playoff level roster. Now we have a coach who is focused on directing that in the right way, not just throwing a lot of cash to chase shiny bells like 'the best recruiting class of all time' with 15 5 star D linemen.
Note I am not saying that this will happen. But with the portal and ability to spend, along with competent coaching, a rebuild can happen in one off-season easily.

I was expecting waaaay more in the portal if Jimmy had stayed. I'll take 12-13.... especially when you consider some of those names I probably never heard of.

With the portal, this is the new normal anytime the coaching staff is completely replaced.
Even with no staff changes, there will be starters leaving; just not as many.
Part of being a coach now is winning the portal battle. Just as important as recruiting.
