Texas A&M adds former Iowa State DL Tyler Onyedim via transfer portal

Texas A&M has bolstered its defensive line room with the addition of Tyler Onyedim — a 6-foot-4, 295-pound interior presence who comes to Aggieland via Iowa State and the transfer portal.

He is Mike Elko's 11th add in this winter transfer window.

Onyedim played his high school ball for Shaun McDowell at Richmond Foster. He played in 40 games throughout his time in Ames and logged 90 total tackles. Of those, 12 were for loss, and he notched three sacks. In 2023, he forced a team-high nine quarterback hurries. He also has one interception (2022) to his name. He was an honorable mention All Big 12 selection.

As a senior in the class of 2021, Onyedim chose the Cyclones over Virginia Tech and Boston College.

Stay tuned. We'll have more shortly for our TexAgs Premium subscribers.

Solid pickup. Interior DL pickings are incredibly slim in the portal. Need atleast 1 more.

Not saying he isn't a great pickup but we need a couple of 320 lb run stoppers in the middle.

Exactly right.
The Southern Cal bowl game prove how seriously lacking we are regarding a power back.
Moss is not a power back.

I an ideal world, yes. Elko's defense is likely best with a 320 pound guy like Mack, Brown, or MacJack.

However, here are the two deeps of the 4 playoff teams:

  • Texas 320,305, 335, and 315
  • ND 295, 288, 316, 278. (#1 in efficiency defense)
  • Ohio State 295, 327, 326, and 295
  • Penn State 288, 305, 305, and 302 (#5 in efficiency defense)

So 2 of the 4 teams in the playoffs have got there without a single 320 pound DT.

Arizona State just held texas to their lowest rushing average all year including Georgia twice. Their 2 deep is 295, 285, 290, 290.

South Carolina was one of the best defenses in the country (4th in efficiency defense) and their 2 deep is 288, 290, 303, and 315.

In other words, while having a 320 pound NT is ideal, there are other ways to skin a cat and be great on defense. SC, ND, Penn State (3 of the top 5 efficiency ranked defenses), don't start a DT over 305

Blake Boenisch starter from Rice, 6'3" 330lb would be a good depth piece in my opinion...literal coach on the field as well as his LinkedIn profile states he wants to get into coaching

Another way to skin the cat is to have big fast physical LB's who fit runs correctly and play downhill and aggression. Maybe we have or can find some of those.

Good program he is coming from so I expect he's a solid defender
