Texas A&M set to move on from Jimbo Fisher as head football coach

Jimbo Fisher is expected to be let go as the head football coach at Texas A&M on Sunday.

TexAgs co-owner and executive editor Billy Liucci first reported the news on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

His ouster would put an end to Fisher’s controversial and disappointing six-year tenure in College Station.

According to Liucci, the decision to terminate Fisher was made at a Board of Regents meeting on Thursday. Texas A&M University will owe Fisher approximately $76 million for the remaining eight years of his guaranteed contract.

Liucci’s report comes after A&M (6-4, 4-3 in the SEC) defeated Mississippi State at Kyle Field on Saturday night, 51-10.

Fisher leaves Texas A&M with a 45-25 overall record and a 27-21 record in Southeastern Conference play.

It is unclear who will assume the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

More to come as this story develops.

Slocum was old and behind the times and needed to go 5 years before we actually found the stones to pull the trigger.

Newsflash: it is possible to be better than perpetual 8-4, we watch other schools do this every year.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Slocum was hamstrung by the admin. He begged for facilities and money to keep assistants. Sumlin actually had the offense airing it out and looking good under Slocum. I don't know how much more Slocum had in him but it would have been interesting to see what he could've done back then with what Jimbo was given now (in relative terms of money back then).

When Weigman is healthy next year, the next guy will do great, maybe NC, with all the 4*,5* guys
The majority of those players are heading into the portal this off-season. Some of them might win a NC, but it won't be with the Aggies

I don't know of course and understand your point. But players leave teams after coaching changes and the announcers were making a big deal out of how our players were already being recruited when Jimbo wasn't known to be leaving.

And another vicious circle of A&M football culture comes to an all too familiar end. It goes deeper than who the coach or players are. It's just our culture. We can't be a winner regardless of who the head coach is. Texas A&M is a rich but dead end for all coaches. I've been a witness for 65 years.

Ok what exactly needs to change? What part of "our culture" is causing this?

We offer:

Money for coach check
Long contracts check
Facilities check
Nil $ check
Letting coach make his own hires even when the program obviously suffers check

Start with this: elimination of the scathing largely unfair negativism about our coaches and players that they read or hear about constantly on this Texags forum from our own fans and students.

Huge mistake. Just need a new line coach. Next 10 years will suck. Even more.
You're such a DA. Lmao. Besides about 5-10% of Aggies and 100% of Sips, no Aggies wanted to keep this loser coach. Sorry we get to have an amazing 2025 recruiting class now and can win the games we've got the players to.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have a strong feeling that Texas A&M football is about to enter a dark age not seen in some time.

Lol. Jimbo lost 25 players to the portal last offseason, and he was going to lose more to the portal this coming offseason and have several more permanent decommits upcoming with a bad '25 class. None of our current players wanted to have another year of their eligibility wasted by Jimbo and continue losing.

Lmao. ya, right. Sips are the goofiest people when it comes to A&M coaching searches. But yeah, a guy 0-3 in his bowl games is tempting!

How is it both rich and a dead end?

Big money rich and dead end fired. Sherrill, Fisher etc

Who ever negotiated Jimbos contract needs to go. The fact that we have to pay out his contract is just stupid. Knowing A&M we will ride out the end of the season with no coach, lose a bunch of the team to the transfer portal and rinse and repeat for the next 10 years. Why anyone donates to a program who makes so many terrible decisions is beyond me.

I wouldn't think an established coach would want to come here now. Going to have to be an up and comer. Maybe that's a good thing. Just need to find the right one.

Yeah, an unproven coach will fail miserably here, will be dominated by media and big cigar Aggies on how to succeed at this cess pool, and he'll become just another former coach in 5-6 years

"Dominated by big cigar Aggies on how to succeed at this cess pool. . . " This is a large part of why we can't win regardless of who the coaches are. "Big cigar Aggies who know better how to succeed." This is the A&M losing culture I've witnessed for 65 years. It goes a lot deeper than who the coaches are and even who the players are.

A&M football is a lot like cowboys football. The administration needs to change before we see a material impact

We will lose players every year, and especially during a coaching change,, BUT... we will lose fewer impact players because of this firing than we would have if Jimbo had been retained.

I don't think we've seen anything yet. Again, hope I'm wrong. I will GLADLY eat crow if this works out in our favor. No need for name calling.

As we saw last night with Henderson, running quarterbacks in college are the new norm. Jimbo never changed with the times.
The paradox is that Jimbo maintained an Oline that forced Qbacks to run.
