Why don't we run up the score?

All top teams run up the score to make a statement. Oregon also did it yesterday. So did Oklahoma.

We never do it, we never have an emphatic win, we always leave some change for the opponents to pick up. Why don't we have the same killer instinct? If we shut out a team 77-0 for example, we is a great confidence booster for us and puts future opponents on the back-foot mentally.

Time to get rid of the "let's be classy" nonsense and turn that into "let's be winners".

Um…we scored 10 points in the last 7 1/2 minutes of the UNM game, including a meaningless FG with 1:16 remaining.

There's no such thing as a "statement win" against New Mexico. It's a bigger hope to see some depth guys get in the game.

Yesterday was perfect . Game was in control from start to finish and we got our bench guys some experience in q4. You don't get any extra credit for running up scores on weaker teams. What you can't do is tell your bench guys not to do the best they can . They are trying to
Compete for future PT and show they are capable . That is exactly what happened in Q4 yesterday imo.

What extra credit?

Running up the score makes your stats look good. Everyone else does it. It also makes you seem imposing to future opponents and boosts ones own confidence.

I'm confused how winning by 42 points isn't running up the score. We ran two minute drills at the end of both half's.

I guess we just aren't good enough at running up the score. I don't know why the coaches don't just practice more at running up the score at practice, then we'd be better at it…

This one was not bad but I'm looking for a signature running up that no one will forget. Like 65+ to nothing. The opponents must be mentally wrecked and unable to score.

If our backups come in and execute and run up the score, great. But I don't want to see our starters out their in the fourth of a blowout.

I dont think we ever punted. Scored on virtually every drive and you think we should have done more?? Haha....this is so dumb. Did you happen to notice how NM bled the clock on every single play to stop exactly what you are asking for?

We punted twice. Once on the opening possession of the second half, and once on Johnson's first drive in the fourth.

Did you not watch the game? We scored on our last 2 possessions and 8 or 11 overall. Plus we scored 50+.

I mean, running up the score used to matter. . . In the BCS era. Now, like others have said, there's no point in running up a score that was already a blowout. Much better benefit in getting depth some playing time.

We were throwing with Max in there. We did run up the score. It would have been worse if the defense could have produced more 3 and outs. It's the defense that prevented the score you hoped for.

This is dumb. 99% of this board would be calling for Jimbos head if QB1 gets a concussion late in the 4th in a 40 pt game.

Part of it was the New Mexico offense shortened the game by running down the play clock nearly every time.

We scored 8 touchdowns on 12 possessions? (one being stopped because it was half time).. and most of the scores were fast too...

The slow start out of halftime is the only thing that concerns me.

Class has nothing to do with it. You don't get bonus AP votes or playoff committee brownie points for scoring 70 against a G5 vs scoring 50. This is a bad post.

7 TDs
1 FG
1 blocked FG
2 punts

11 total possessions...8 scores. With the new clock rules and the aforementioned UNM clock strategy, there are only so many points available to be scored in the game. Unless you get a pick-6, scoop and score, or a kick return TD, it's really tough to score more points than we did on Saturday night.

Oregon scored 81 points against Portland - who is waaaaaay worse than New Mexico - and the Ducks' only had one drive lasting more than 4 minutes. They were aided by a fumbled Portland punt, that set UO up with a short field and a really quick TD. UO scored 11 TDs, kicked a FG, and punted once. They got 13 possessions in their game and their Time of Possession for each drive was as such:

2:34 - TD...and a 2-point conversion
1:08 - TD
2:02 - TD
1:37 - TD
0:25 - TD
2:06 - TD
3:18 - TD
0:51 - TD
2:48 - TD
5:43 - FG
3:54 - TD
2:07 - Punt...what the heck???
2:46 - TD

After the blocked FG, we needed that unit to show they could execute. Hence, kicking the field goal at the end of the game was the correct call. Had we made the first field goal, I imagine we would have gone for it on 4th and short and then gone to victory formation.

It's also possible that Jimbo had the Ags at -39.

LSU was #5 coming into the weekend. I assume they ran up the score as well?

We took out our starter after he had 5 TDs. Covered a 38.5 point spread. I'd say we did exactly what we needed to do. And I almost never say that about Jimbo's squads.

You do realize our defense gave up two 6-7 minute drives to NM. Due to that, there simply wasn't enough time to 'run up the score'.

It wasn't like it was taking us 10 plays and 6 minutes to score. We just didn't have enough opportunities.

Possibly the worst take of the new season

Maybe there should be a thread with the worst takes throughout the season
At the end of the season we have a blue star poll for worst take of the year

The downside is putting all the message board genius post in one easy to find thread would be easy for national media to make fun of us

What?

We easily could have scored 60+ if we kept Weigman in and to be honest I think the only reason we didn't with Max is because he came in the game a little rusty which is understandable. Also on our FG Walker dripped a TD pass.

I told you what I want.
What our guys did was great, don't get me wrong. But we still don't do bonecrushing victories like the top dogs do. We tend to ease up in 4Q. Maybe this is a mental edge we lose.

To put what I want in numbers, I want a score of
Quote:

65+ to 0
We score more than 65.
Opponents do not score.

This gives the mental edge to both O and D.

I agree with you. But we dropped 10. Even a score of 52-0 would have been good.

Doesn't this look like an epic beatdown? It's a complete victory leaving the opponent with nothing to take back home.
We still remember the 0-77 we suffered.
