maroon- that was the way at the time, and A&M was literally the FIRST team to figure out defensing the spread or "run n shoot". but offenses (and defenses) are so much more sophisticated now. not that I understand it.

I remember what RC said the key was at the time- for the DL and LBs to put incredible pressure AND THEN after the ball was thrown quick and short, to bust their ass back to the receiver to help on the tackle. mich respect to our defense which ACTUALLY DID THAT!

I also think you put a couple of head hunting LBs and safeties out there and "legally" clock any RB coming out of the backfield every time they hit the line of scrimmage…

Just clock them…. Punish them physically for the entire 1st Qtr…Make them tentative..

Bring as much "heat" on the quarterback as possible. Elko blew it last year by dropping 8 and playing a 3-man front. To beat MSU, we have to collapse the pocket and stay in the quarterback's face or he will pick us apart. It's clear Jimbo's offense needs time to start rolling. So, Durkin needs to force as many 3 and outs as possible.

By the way, Durkin did a great job beating MSU last year. Held them to 21.

Ol Miss rushed 3 and dropped 8 into coverage, so expect to see this type of defensive game plan this weekend

I would bet a lot of money we play 3 down lineman this week on defense. We may bring 4 or even 5, like Ole Miss played us last year, but it will be 3 man fronts. The key vs Leach is be alert for the short crossers and you must tackle well.

Man, so many good memories of those A&M teams back then. Hadn't thought of that Cougar High shutdown in a while.

QC hit isn't targeting. It is, however the "you hit him too hard" penalty, also known as hitting a defenseless receiver.

Well no targeting back then. But if there was, I thought it was targeting? Broke the dudes jaw so he definitely hit a defenseless receiver high.

Back then, we had a lot of good linebackers. We did two things against Houston. First, we would blitz one or two on every play and drop the rest into coverage, never the same ones every time. Second, we switched linebackers to different positions left and right. They never knew who was coming from where or how many. We don't have the linebackers to do that anymore.

Mimic lsu's defensive game plan, holding Miss St to 16 pts.

Cover all receivers.

If I remember correctly, the key to that game was msu's receivers couldn't catch a cold that day much less the football. They had like 6-10 drops. Something we rarely see from them.

The blueprint to beating msu is to score one more point than they do- by any means possible

Then why couldn't RC beat Leach when he was at Tceh?

Targeting. Auto ejection. 2 games.

Putting pressure with your front four is the key to controlling the Air raid. The QB is trained to watch for the open space created by a blitzer and too often chunk plays ensue. Maybe a blitz works on occasion but consistent blitzing is a good way to get beat imo.

The air raid and the run and shoot were different

That was Leach's 1st season at Tech (2000). Leach went on to beat A&M 7 of the next 9 between 2001 and 2009.

You mean Buckley?

- lots and lots of pressure on QB, with containment
- don't allow any completed passes over 15 yards
- excellent open field tackling
- no turnovers
- no drive killing penalties
