I am pleased to say that my son was recently accepted to the Fightin Texas Aggie Class of 2026! Whoop!

While the news was great to hear, we are unfamiliar with the entire scholarship process. He is in high school athletics, honor society, captain of wrestling team, and so far he is the salutatorian for his graduating class.

Can anyone point us in the right direction in order to maximize the financial benefit he can receive?

Sounds like a great Corps candidate. Scholarships opportunities areunlimited there.
Also each academic department has scholarship money for high GPA students.
Dont discount your high schools local scholarships.

Congratulations! That is great news!

No knowledge of scholarship strategy, but there are people you can hire who specialize in finding money/scholarships. I don't think they are very expensive.

Don't know if this rings true at the NCAA D1 level, but he may not be able to get a lot of purely academic scholarships if he plays an NCAA sport. My brother played some juco baseball as a walk-on, and he was an excellent student but wasn't able to receive any academic scholarships because it counted toward the scholarship limits of his team. It might be the same for your son. Sports teams need guys to hold their GPA's up though so he can probably earn a bit of money from the athletic department for having good grades after a semester or 2.

Lastly, just google, "tamu student aid." Find a list of scholarships and go to town. Some are oddly specific, some are totally broad.

Depends. Scholarships from 3rd party, you still have a chance. Scholarships from the university or government? Your family's income seems to matter less than your race.

Congrats and get him the all sports pass and sign up for students' 12th Foundation for any perks and start compiling points for consecutive years.

The Academics forum has A&M counselors and financial people. Good people and helpful.

Sign up for on campus housing as fast as possible. It's important to be part of the campus scene as a fish.

Spend a night with the Corps and see if that's something he'd like. The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band ?

I would also advise you to have your son meet with his high school guidance counselor. There are countless scholarships available through local organizations and businesses. It takes some doing to apply for them all but if awarded are worth the effort. It is true there are some that are awarded by ethnicity. My son was not eligible for those. He was top ten percent and did a lot of service in his community. On awards night at his high school he walked out with 90k in scholarships. One was based on a major. When he decided to change his major I had him give it back to the grantor so that it could be awarded properly. The grantor accepted it and sent him a letter stating that it was unnecessary but they appreciated his honesty and awarded him money for being honest. Not as much as he gave back but it was an unexpected gesture.

12th man kickoff team? Should be able to get a good grant for that time machine he built.

I was lazy at filling out applications. My department gave me a couple without asking. If I were to do it over again, I would fill out ever appi could find. No scholarship is too small.

If your high school counselor is not all over scholarships- then he/she is not doing their job.

Is he currently enrolled at Tascosa?

However after you graduate you will get more phone calls from Texas A&M for donations than you get automobile car warranty phone calls.

My children and myself never got a dime but still get shaming phone calls to donate.

Be a national merit scholar. Otherwise, good luck getting anything that isn't need-based.

My daughter got married at the end of her freshman year. So…it turns out that helps…

Over and above any scholarships and other financial aid offed by A&M, be sure to look into and apply for scholarships awarded by your local A&M Club.

Apply for ALL scholarships/grants you can find.

Minority didn't get my son a damn thing. Every scholarship he was awarded was local. TAMU didn't give him anything he applied for.

Here to reiterate the point above. My youngest was accepted to A&M School of Engineering and the scholarships and grants (I know, grants are different) he received would have brought his annual cost to attend down to around $10k/year. As others have stated, fill out the FAFSA and apply for every scholarship he can.
