Hopefully he's making bank, though I doubt it at Duke. Not sure why you'd take a dead-end job like that days after Venables showed that you can sit on a high tier defense for a little while and move onto a top-tier program when the spot's available.

Jimbo has never had a problem replacing coaches, Elko was great while he was here but I fully expect the next DC to be just as great or better.

Yup. Remember his bend but don't break style allowed Ole Piss and State to just march up and down at will. Im ready for a more aggressive approach.
Yep. I trust Jimbo to hire an upgrade.

The fates of the defensive position coaches just became the hottest topic of the last and, perhaps, biggest recruiting weekend.

How is duke football a career move? Somebody explain it to me. Winning a national championship is a career move. Elko makes 3 million a year or so. What more could you want?

Ehhh it will be fine…I'm sure Jimbos on it! Bama loses top coordinators all the time…no one freaks out. We will be fine.

Good luck at dook

The man wants to be a head coach, why is his career decision anything you should be concerned with? He owes you nothing. He obviously wants to run a program and not be second in command.

And that national championship you mentioned is an assumption which means nothing in January when this team has yet to prove it can come close to that. Recruiting is off the charts but nothing on the field has happened.

Good luck Coach Elko !! I am truly happy for you, thanks for your time here in Aggieland, I appreciate what you did here. Good luck at Duke, I will always be a fan of yours.

I'm not saying he owes me anything. But that doesn't mean the move isn't selfish as hell to the team. Ambition is one hell of a drug because it takes you places that you don't always need to be. I wish him the best, but he could have effectively f***** us. Only way we salvage the situation is to promote Robinson.

The timing hurts not only for recruiting, but also for us finding a replacement. We'd essentially have to promote from within or pluck from someone right before signing day. That's a horrible situation.

I don't care what anyone says. That is the most selfish decision I've seen in a long time. The school that you work for is about to sign the number 1 recruiting class, is knocking on the door for a national championship. You are a DC. And you leave to go be a Head Coach at a basketball school? Like wtf. And you already are heavily compensated for 3 mil a year

There isn't glory at Duke, he could win a title here and go be a head coach somewhere better. That's ego to me

I'm not selfish. I wish him the best. I'm just saying that to leave your team right before they could jump the hump because you wanted a head coaching job basically anywhere? He basically pulled a Lincoln Riley.

Congrats to Coach Elko and best of luck at Duke! In the long term, it is good for the program when coordinators get hired for head coaching jobs and when position coaches get hired for coordinator roles. Shows the coaching community that they can bring their talent to College Station, be successful, and take their career to the next level. It's no different then when highly touted recruits are successful here, leave early, and become high round NFL draft picks. It's a sign of a successful program.

Except there's literally no chance jimbo was caught off guard in this.

Elko leaving isn't selfish or self centered. The man has a chance to pursue a head coaching job which he obviously has a desire for and that's part of any profession.

Probably a good first head coaching school…not a lot of pressure and time to learn the ropes as a first time HC…

He was a little overrated in my opinion.
Look at all the talent he was working with.
He made the right move at the right time for him.

Overall I liked him and thought he was good but he costs us games. He can't defend the hurry up. Takes too long to analyze the plays and what to call. I think we could potentially do better. Hope Jimbo makes the right hire, hope we don't lose any commits over this.

The worst thing about this is feeling a need to root for Duke out of fondness for Elko and what he did for us

If he gets Duke to bottom 3rd of college football total defense he deserves a huge job next. But...this will likely be his first and last head coaching job. How many football coaches have left for places like Kansas, another basketball school...it doesn't end well. But, whoever they bring in will be only be as good or better. Should be hand picked with the unit they get to coach.

You really can't be serious, can you? People leave for promotions and pay increases all of the time. It's A&M's job and Jimbo's job to replace him with someone as good or better and keep on going.

Aggies have never left their current job to go to a new employer with more career enhancing opportunities? I never remember that being taught at A&M.

Happy for the guy....
