This is the first year in recruiting that NIL is in effect. This is also the best recruiting class we've ever seen. So if you connect the dots, $$$ is probably a pretty big factor here, so I don't think Elko leaving is going to have too much of an impact.

I'm not happy that Elko is leaving, but realistically it is a super smart decision for him.

Research Triangle is a beautiful part of the country, and expectations for football at Duke are very low. There are big donors yes but they care more about basketball. You have the backing of a well-funded athletics program without the pitchforks that come with the A&M fanbase.

As good as Aggies are, we are a high maintenance fanbase for a coach. Not as high maintenance as the horns, but we're not easy going either.

This is a career for them.

When they have an opportunity to move ahead in their career, they will take it. They are loyal to their paycheck, not a school, with very few exceptions, like RC.

Really? How many assistants have we had hired away for head coaching gigs? The number I'm thinking of fits on one hand.

Most people would think it's a sign of a strong program when other schools try to poach the staff.

haha, yeah it is. not this exact situation but it's just another <insert bas situation here> for aggie football. whether it be <stupid clemson has a 10yo kicker....beats us 25-24> or <fran kicks field goal in 4th qtr with 3:30 left against oklahoma> or <#8 a&m collapses against #7 osu in 2011> or <matchup of the century johnny football vs saban.....L 42-49> or <hire awesome dc....3rd & chavis> or <two 5 star qbs to take the sec west by storm...both transfer> or <9-3 ags new year 6 bowl here we come....lose to terrible 5-6 lsu team> or <no way our top dc leaves right before signing for a crap program like duke....does> it's just another notch. that's all i was saying. you must be a pumper if i have to explain this...

It's never fair to criticize someone for taking the opportunity to become a head coach. Having the opportunity to be the head guy, the one in charge, the final say is priceless. Good luck Coach Elko! Given our history playing NC teams, we may see you soon lol!

Honestly I was not happy to see this this. My buddies from other programs have been jabbing me about it for weeks. The entire time in the back of my mind I was thinking he would be dumb not to take it. I wish him the best of luck. He has an uphill battle. He is a hell of a coach and I hope it translates to a HC position.

I'm sure Jimbo saw this coming a mile away as well as Elko being honest with it. He has prepared his list. We will be fine. I bet we don't lose one recruit.

Yes, congrats to Dave Clawson…

Elko owes Clawson far more than he owes Jimbo Fisher or any fan base of any program and now he is gonna try to beat the hell out of him every year. I am sure that Clawson is happy for Elko nevertheless and certainly didn't think he was selfish for leaving Wake just as the offense was turning the corner to go with the very good defenses Elko was putting together.

That said, I'm surprised that Duke is the job that he took. I would have thought he would have been in the running for much better jobs over the next year or two. But it might just be that he is more comfortable in a smaller school environment given that's where he has mostly worked.

This sucks but Duke can be a stepping stone. Steve Spurrier had some success there before UF.

He was close to landing Tech, and was apparently very impressive. That's not a secret. Is Duke a better job than Tech? I think it might be. Better conference, and one that's very winnable. Great location, and one that's familiar to him. He's had shots, but been picky. This was his shot at a P5 job, and one that will have patience with him.

Most of us would have taken this in our career, rather than sitting and waiting and hoping you get the breaks and everything works out perfect to get something even better. He actually did that last year, and we regressed. You have to take this if you're him.

Jimbo will upgrade the DC and Elko is happy. Win Win.
