His being an elite baseball talent just shows that he is an elite athlete whose resume can't just be thrown out the window. If we want to punish athletes for playing bad defenses, let's punish the last 2 heismans (heismen?) for playing on freakishly insane offenses that made them look better than they really might have been. It doesn't diminish his accomplishment at all. #2 that year was Tua. Tua played on a team that was leaps and bounds ahead of every SEC team in terms of talent and coaching, just as OU was in the Big 12. Are his accomplishments diminished simply because his team was so much better than everyone else in the conference? Tua was 1st team All-SEC that year, but compared to Bama, he played against much weaker teams. Arizona is not trying to make Kyler a pocket passer, defenses have adjusted and are using a containment rush to keep him in the pocket and to limit his running and or scrambling. This has been the strategy by defenses most of the year, but especially since week 5. Try watching the Cardinals more than once a year next time before your spout off with some your high level analysis..W said:

Jake would not have known of all the dynamics that were a part of that quarterback situation. He would not be aware of all private conversations with both quarterbacks. He would not be aware of the parents conversations with the coaches. No way he knew everything the coaches were dealing with when it related to Kyler and Kyle.
Granted, it's the coaches responsibility to keep the entire quarterback room from transferring so the end blame is definitely on Sumlin. However, it doesn't change the fact that the poster here still could be very correct in that Kyler is a whiny little ***** (a very rich one though).

Its just an outside observation but clearly Sumlin wasn't working closely enough with the individual players (like Allen and Murray) to develop any trust or personal relationships with key players. Thus when there was anxiety or insecurity, the individual players had no guidance on what to expect or what comes next.
Contrast that with Jimbo. He might is jawing with the players every time they leave the field but listen the the post-game pressers.... every players says things like "Coach always says this or that..." Over and over, these guys know just where they stand with Jimbo and his staff.
I'm sure there are plenty of players who prefer not getting ripped by coach but if they've been playing football for 15 years (like many of them have), they know that's part of football.

Not sure he was an elite baseball talent, maybe he was. But I do know he never threw for 400 yards and 3 TDs vs. Bama. If you are referring to the CFP game, it was 21-0 at 1Q, 28-0 and 31-10 at HT, all the stats after that really don't matter.

Murray was selected 9th overall in the MLB draft, which is an elite indicator to me but that's totally opinionated. He may have been drafted even higher, but teams knew the risk of him never picking up a bat and going to the NFL instead. He only threw for 300 against Bama, rushed for the other 100, and while 300 is amazing, it does go to your point that he's needed his legs in the past, which is not the best recipe for success. Going into the 4th quarter of that CFP game, it was an 11 point game and OU had scored 20 of the last 23 points, including winning the 3rdQ 10-0. OU was not going gentle into that goodnight, and Bama was not comfortable going into the 4th.
I'm not saying he's gonna change the NFL, neither is Lamar, despite winning an MVP 2 seasons ago. QBs who are elite passers will still win 90% of super bowls. But I believe Kyler has the arm to be elite, or get close enough to be the 10%. I was disappointed with his arm strength his freshman year at A&M. I expected a baseball arm, and he didn't have it, but when he played college baseball, he moved to the outfield and grew a lot of arm strength.in AZ, He's not scrambling around and playing Houdini like he used to. He's averaging less than 20 rushing yards per game this year, Which is less than elite arm talent and super bowl QB Russel Wilson rushes for. Kliff has him sitting in the pocket and ripping the ball across the field in that spread-em-out offense. Kliff is a brilliant offensive mind as has set a great offense ahead of Kyler, who is molding it to his liking.
Between Lamar and Vick winning MVPs, I believe he can do that. And with dual-threat QBs Russel Wilson and Commie Kaepernick making several super bowls and winning 1, I believe he can do that too. He can run as well as any of those guys and pass almost as well as any of them in his 2nd year.
Kyler has also been a leader for that team since draft day, despite what many of bitter ags, who you mentioned, believe. Last summer, amid Covid, Kyler told his receivers, "Hey Texas is open. Come out here for the summer, I'll take care of you, and let's start getting reps together."
Green bay in shotgun inside the 1 blew my mind. If you don't want Rodgers to get under a dogpile, send Jordan Love out there, sheesh. They screwed it up doing the same thing in the first half at one point, too, I think.

Jake would know infinitely more about what went on behind the scenes than anyone here. Could the poster be correct? Yes, just as a broken clock is correct twice a day. I'll defer to someone actually in the QB room though.

It was true when he was drafted and its true now...he's small and one blindside hit away from being done. Healthy and in peak playing shape he's a superb NFL player. A tweaked ankle or rolled up blocker will end his mobility quickly.Jarrin' Jay said:

MLB draft is based on potential, much more so than NFL draft where someone drafted that high is expected to be NFL ready. I am not an expert on OU baseball but my understanding was Kyler was very average in college baseball and not even a starter.

It's not about his time at A&M being brought up. It's that it's brought up every single time. It's like it's
on a teleprompter or programmed in or something. The opinions never evolve.or change.
Hmmm, that's a really good point about them drafting for potential. Looking at it now, he wasn't a sub, He played 51 games and had 189 AB's with a decent average of .300. He had elite speed, good power for someone his size, averaging 1 HR every 19 AB's. So yeah, he showed signs of being able to hit, hit for power, he had the speed, and I assume he was fine in the field. But he never really broke through on any of those. He was a key piece of their lineup though.
The 20th pick that year, playing at Oregon State, however, didn't miss a game. He hit .348 with 19 HRs and he was also an outfielder. I know those are just a few stats, but the overwhelming majority of the other stats also lead me to say the Oregon State outfielder would be the better choice, yet he was picked 11 picks later. In conclusion, the idea of the MLB drafting for future potential while the NFL focuses more on your results as an indicator for the future is a really good point. Thanks for that!
