Helped my wife's grandmother move from Kewaunee, Wisconsin to Edmond, Oklahoma in 2013.

On the way to Wisconsin from Oklahoma:
  • Witnessed a domestic dispute at a gas station in Missouri where the "boyfriend" chunked his "girlfriend's" cell phone on to the roof of the gas station. He busted her windshield with his fist and he rode on the hood as she tried to drive off. They were quickly stopped by some of Missouri's finest police officers.
  • Had to outrun an F2 tornado that got within 8-10 miles of us on I-35 in Illinois. It crossed just south of us, and there was no where to go but north on I-35.
  • While stopping for food in southern Wisconsin, we went over some railroad tracks and our uHaul trailer came loose from our SUV and (luckily) came to a stop in the right hand lane a hundred feet or so past the tracks. The lock-pin was gone and we still don't know how and when it came off.
  • All of this was going on while my wife was experiencing morning sickness throughout the day, and we had to come clean and tell her whole family in WI that we were pregnant with our first child.

On the way to Oklahoma from Wisconsin:
  • Nothing, completely normal road trip/moving experience

90 miles. And the most interesting thing about it was seeing how much the moving company could charge me and how much stuff they could tear up.

Fort Worth TX to Athens Greece last month. This is not the first long move either. It has to be well orchestrated by your company. If they don't. Over taxes, don't consider it. That is the most expensive part.

College Station to Connecticut.

Wheel sheared off the vehicle trailer and caught the median on fire in Louisiana. For a second there we thought about leaving the fire alone in hopes it would burn the whole damn state down to the ground. That stretch of I- 10 sucked then and still sucks to this day.

I am active duty Navy and have moved coast to coast numerous times. The most interesting would have been my second move from Virginia to California or my move from California to Florida. The reason being, I had to stay behind after moving the family which opened the door for me to ride my Harley coast to coast. Made it from San Diego, CA to Mayport, FL in 48 hours.

Another interesting one was our move from Auburn, AL to Newport, RI. I was driving an F250 and towing a uhaul. We stayed a night in Hoboken, NJ and the hotel was valet parking only. They asked me to park it because they didn't feel comfortable doing so. When we left the hotel the next day, we took a wrong turn and I ended up in downtown NYC in the quad cab F250 and uhaul. That was a stressful drive.

When I was nine (1987) we moved from Vidor, TX to Colfax, CA (2,071 miles). t the time it was difficult to rent a moving truck, so my parents purchased an old truck from a window and door company in Dallas. Behind it was a fully loaded three-axle trailer (CB handle was "Big Blue"). Our wood panel station wagon carried me and my brothers and pulled a trailer with a red Chevette loaded with clothes and our dog Shoes ("Little Red Doghouse").

We made it to Beaumont (10 minutes) before the first incident occurred--my dad had loaded the Chevette backward causing the trailer to sway violently. The windows of the Chevette were open to keep the dog cool, but the saying caused a load of clean laundry to fly out all over the Neches River bridge.

We reloaded the trailer in the Target parking lot. Another 10 minutes down the road, my aunt and uncle took the wrong split in Lumberton. My dad left us with the trailer and chased them down in the station wagon, only to find that they had had a flat tire. It would be the first of nearly a dozen tires we would change over the course of a seven-day trip. That night we stayed at the Woodville Inn (an hour from Vidor) and saw my mom's cousin at breakfast.

My most vivid memories from the trip were my dad realizing that he had too much weight on the hitch of the trailer. So at while we stayed at a Motel near San Antonio, he pulled his welder off the trailer and plugged it into the motel laundromat to fix the hitch.

A day or so later, we left El Paso around midnight. I was in the middle seat of the station wagon with a perfect view of the truck ahead of us. As we crossed into New Mexico, his welds failed and the six or eight-ton trailer dropped onto I-10 at 50 mph. The chains held and the trailer skidded down the highway, throwing sparks high into the air.

TL;DR My family's move to California in the mid-eighties was straight out of the Beverly Hillbillies.

I moved from the Mariner Valley, Tharsis Region, Mars (a little town called Buna) to Roswell, NM, USA, Earth, in July 1947 (appx. 188.1 million miles at the time of travel). It created a real stink. My cousin still lives in Roswell. His name is Marvin.
