Surprise (AZ) RB Darvon Hubbard signs with Texas A&M

One top priority for Texas A&M in January has been to find another quality running back for the 2020 class. The Aggies signed Deondre Jackson‍ and Devon Achane‍ in the early period but have been looking to bolster the position after transfers depleted the depth chart behind freshman standout Isaiah Spiller.

On the first weekend official visitors were allowed, the Aggies hosted Surprise (AZ) Willow Canyon running back Darvon Hubbard‍. Following his visit, Hubbard canceled all of his other visits, and on National Signing Day he announced and finalized his decision.

The Aggies had several things playing in their favor.

“What put Texas A&M over the top was the coaching staff and the facilities and everything like that. The overall atmosphere,” Hubbard said. “Also the education.”

The depth chart at running back also played a key factor. Coach Dickey has let him know he should arrive ready to play because he will have every opportunity to contribute early. The news is exciting, and Hubbard feels like he can contribute in a variety of ways.

“I feel like I’m a guy who can be used in multiple areas,” Hubbard said. “They said they would use me as a slot to go one-on-one with a linebacker and get me into space and also run me between the tackles as well.”

The 6-foot, 195-pound standout chose the Aggies over LSU, Georgia and TCU, and he becomes the 24th member of Texas A&M’s 2020 recruiting class.

“He’s a go-getter. He’s one of those gym rat kids,” Ray Dent, who has trained Hubbard since his freshman year, said. “That’s all he loves to do is work. He’s not a problem kid. He’s one of those 3.3-3.5 GPA kids. He’s a gym rat. He works, works, works, works all the time trying to perfect his game. That’s all I’ve ever seen him do.”

“He’s not overly rah-rah, but he’s definitely energetic,” Dent added. “He doesn’t talk when he’s playing, but he gets after it. You’ll know he’s in the building. He’s one of those guys when he comes to camp he’ll be the first in line. He’s an alpha dog.”

Originally from Akron, Ohio, Hubbard moved to Scottsdale, Arizona before his sophomore season. In two seasons at Chaparral, he rushed for 1,324 yards and 12 TDs on 193 carries and had another 88 yards on 15 carries. As a senior, he transferred to Willow Canyon in Surprise, Arizona where he rushed for 684 yards and 8 TDs on 99 carries and had 334 yards and 3 TDs on 19 receptions.

His rankings on 247 are pretty funny. He was rated from .93 to .96 almost his entire recruitment. He visits us in January and we become the favorite and then in February when all the football playing is over he drops to .90.

Yeah, what gives with his rankings. His numbers definitely dropped off his Senior year but offers from us, Ohio St, and Bama seems to indicate a high level player.

Compare his offer list to the "four star" that tu signed today. Kelvontay Dixon.

What I like about his tape- at times he doesn't even look like he is running that hard- and yet he is blowing by guys. Then at times busts out the extra gear. Could be a good one.

I see a pretty consistent 6-7 ypc average and some nice ypr on catches. And I like his attitude.

I was one of those bummed about Evans, but man, I like this...

"...He's not overly rah-rah, but he's definitely energetic," Dent added. "He doesn't talk when he's playing, but he gets after it. You'll know he's in the building. He's one of those guys when he comes to camp he'll be the first in line. He's an alpha dog..."
