There are a lot of ways you could define "good". I don't know why, but I'm enjoying this conversation. I shouldn't be, because it's a total waste of time, but hey. Whatever.

There are 130 FBS teams. Divide that number into however many categories you'd like. Tell the internet how you break them down, and where "good" starts.

That seems like a decent way to do it.

But I'm open to any variety of options.

If ever there was an opportunity fro Sumlin and the Ags to rack up some SEC West wins (minus Bama), this is the year. The weakest the West has been since we moved in.

Top 20 - Great (bama)
21-45 - Good (maybe USCe somewhere near the bottom)
46-85 - Average (Florida and UCLA solidly in the middle, maybe USCe somewhere near the top, ULaLa bear the bottom)
85-105 - Bad (Nichols)
106-130 - Terrible (Arky)

USCe is hard to place because their level of competition is very meh. They lost to and barely beat a couple of average teams, but they also beat an NC State team that is doing pretty well. They could fall somewhere between 40-50, IMO.

That's fair. Are you taking about at the end of the season or at any point during?

Unless I'm missing a joke somewhere this list is kind of all over the place.

Nichols is not FBS and would not be in the top 100 if they were.
Lafayette is almost certainly outside of the top 100
Arkansas is bad, but likely not the worst in the SEC and probably still in the top 80-90

The others are probably reasonable.

S&P+ is still a bit wonky at this point in the season but for what it's worth

https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/10/15/16478770/ncaa-football-rankings-2017-130-teams

2) Alabama
48) Florida
58) UCLA
63) South Carolina
67) Arkansas
103) UL-Lafayette

(A&M is 53)

Right now and where I expect them to end up, just because they're kind of the same places.

Arkansas just isn't good. I see them going 5-7 with losses to Auburn, MSU, and LSU, but they could also end up 6-6 or 4-8. Their game with Ole Miss will probably look like a cripple fight.

SCe has a favorable schedule and will likely end up 8-4 or 9-3 if they're lucky. I think they lose to Georgia, but the Clemson game is a crapshoot rivalry. They've had a very favorable schedule with the East minus Georgia being pretty bad this year.

Florida will likely lose to Georgia and SCe. FSU is a crapshoot. Both teams look pedestrian right now, and it's also a rivalry game. They could be 7-5 or 6-6. I think they have an outside shot at 8-4, but I think 7-5 is the most realistic.

UCLA is hard because I don't keep up with the PAC12. I don't see them better than 8-4. I think the PAC has a lot of parity with decent but not great teams. I think they lose to USC, but they have a shot at being the rest of their schedule. 7-5 would not shock me.

So UCLA and Florida would be average teams, SCe looks above average with a weak schedule, and Arkansas is dog poop that's been stepped in.

Maybe I'm selling arky short, but they're pretty bad. Nichols isn't FBS, but if they were I'd put them somewhere between 100 and 110.

They are 5-4 and got destroyed by Sam and lost to South Alabama. They are not that good. They may be able to beat Kansas or Baylor but that's about it. I would put them at 125 at best.

Everyone wants Sumlin fired but has no idea who to replace him with. Everyone in the SEC has fired their and replaced their coach in the last 10 years and still no one can beat Bama.

Sumlin should be fired. I don't think he is a very good coach. Obviously if we win out he will not be fired
Sumlin has had more than enough failures to warrant firing. If the ags win out It is not because he has improved as a coach it is tbecause the SEC is not as good this year. Sumlin keeps making the same mistakes.
Two obvious ones both pertain to qb mgmt. if a qb is unavailable dont pretend like he is. Don't play true fish unless there is an emergency.

My Ole Miss and Arkansas buddies (I live around an abnormal amount of alumni from those two schools) said if we don't want Sumlin, they'll take the 8-5 seasons. I'll admit, that did make me laugh.

Nobody wants 8-5 seasons. And the assumption is that he would win 8 games a year at either of those places.

Sumlin is going to win 10 games here and leave for another gig after this season.

I doubt he wins 10 this year. It's not impossible with the state of the league, but I doubt it.

I've always been a sunshine pumper - heck, this morning I even stuck my head in the bosses office and guaranteed the Ags couldn't lose this weekend.

But the UCLA game hit me hard. I'm so bruised with BAS, that I still had trouble watching the games - and every one of them has been like thumping the bruises - they weren't outright violence, but they threatened it.

My goal for Bama was just to not look foolish, and I think we did that alright, so while I would have been ecstatic with a win, I don't count it as a total loss.

And I'm still in that wgaf mode. We haven't invited anyone over to watch the games, haven't gone to anyone's house to watch them either. We've just watched them if we were home and it was convenient. I'm a little numb right now.

So what will it take for wins to matter? Something that excites me- makes me look forward to Aggie football again. A quality and decisive win that doesn't feel like we got lucky. Where the other team doesn't have the opportunity for a game winning march at the end of the game unless we somehow manage to stop it.

Because we didn't win. Florida lost the game. It's the same as us losing.

My thoughts:
1. This season is clearly Sumlins best coaching job.

2. We haven't beaten anyone good, but we have used a vastly improved defense to outlast some mediocre teams and hang with Bama.

3. It's not clear to me why "bangers" aren't allowed to look more closely at the quality of our opponents, but "pumpers" are allowed to explain away the poor records of our opponents.

4. There's a lot of football left to be played before we can draw conclusions about this season.

5. So far, we look fairly average all things considered. If we were average in year 6 after being great for 2-3 years, that would be one thing. But we're average in year 6 after being slightly abovr average for 3 years. If consistently slightly above average is our goal, then we should keep Sumlin because he seems to be very good at that. Clearly worse than good teams, clearly better than bad teams.

6. Blaming an anemic offense on a true freshman quarterback only takes it back to Sumlin. It's year six. We didn't lose a battle tested upperclassman to injury, we lost a red shirt freshman because we had to resort to a one year transfer after failing to retain or develop quarterbacks for several years.

Nichols - nope. Cupcake we should've won by 40. Fire Sumlin.
ULL - nope. See above.
Arky - nope. OT wins don't count. Arky is terrible. Coach is terrible. Fire Sumlin b/c he didn't try to win in regulation.
SC - nope. They're terrible, and we only won by 7.
Florida - nope. Winning with field goals and strong defense doesn't count, even on the road in the SEC, where the home team has won 85% of their games over 3 decades. Not enough offensive yards. Fire Sumlin.

So, moving forward?

MSU win? - Nope. They're garbage. Winning by less than 50 won't count.
Auburn win? - Nope. They're terrible b/c they lost to terrible LSU. Win won't count.
New Mexico? - Ha! Sumlin should be fired for scheduling them. Won't count.
LSU? - Nope. They lost to MSU and Troy, and their coach is Coach O, so winning won't count.
Bowl game? - Will probably be some garbage bowl, and not the playoff.

11 - 2. None of it counts. Fire Sumlin. Is that about right?

We are 9-4 at best. Pretty Meh for year 6. Bang them pots boys!

Can we please stop talking about overall record? I mean that's all great for going to some 'also ran bowl', but there are only eight games that matter and really only six as far as division standings are concerned. We are currently 3-3 in conference play and 1-3 in SECW looking at finishing no better than 3-3 and realistically finishing at 2-4. That is all that this program should be evaluated on.

I never looked at this thread because I didn't want to believe someone would gloat after a 7 point win at Kyle over an average sc team, an ot victory over an Arkansas team that is poised to finish 4-8, and a 2 point win over the worst Florida team in 40 years.

We have all witnessed the past 4 seasons and all it took were those 3 wins for people to start getting cocky. It's embarrassing.
